President William Ruto has congratulated Team Kenya for its performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where the country finished 12th overall with 12 medals.
In a statement on August 2, Ruto listed the athletes who won medals for Kenya and praised the team for what he described as an outstanding performance on the international stage.
“We are proud of Team Kenya for an outstanding performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. With an impressive haul of 12 medals – 3 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze – Kenya finished 12th overall, once again demonstrating our excellence on the global stage,” Ruto stated.
Kenya’s Commonwealth Games Medal Winners
Kenya won three gold, four silver and five bronze medals, with gold medals coming from Edmund Serem (3,000m steeplechase), Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang (5,000m) and Faith Cherotich (3,000m steeplechase).
Silver medals were won by Stephen Ndangiri Kihu (10,000m walk), Simon Kiprop Koech (3,000m steeplechase), Diana Wanza (10,000m) and Lilian Odira (800m).
The bronze medalists were Leonard Kipkemoi Bett (3,000m steeplechase), Wyclife Kinyamal (800m), Timothy Cheruiyot (One Mile), Irene Jepkemboi (Javelin) and Joshua Amunga Mboya (60kg weightlifting).

Ruto thanked the athletes for flying the Kenyan flag high and congratulated them on their achievements.
“We celebrate your outstanding achievements and thank you for flying the Kenyan flag high,” he said.
About the 2026 Commonwealth Games
The 2026 Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026, bringing together about 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories.
The Games featured 10 sports: 3×3 basketball, artistic gymnastics, athletics, bowls, boxing, judo, netball, swimming, track cycling and weightlifting.
Competitions were staged at venues including the Glasgow International Arena, Scottish Event Campus, Scotstoun Stadium and Tollcross International Swimming Center. The official mascot for the Games was Finnie, a unicorn.

Glasgow hosted the Commonwealth Games for the second time, having previously staged the event in 2014.
Why Glasgow Hosted the 2026 Commonwealth Games
Glasgow was selected to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games after it emerged as one of the few cities capable of staging the event at short notice following the collapse of the original hosting arrangement.
The city was chosen because it had previously hosted the Games in 2014, already had the required sporting venues and experienced workforce, and could deliver a smaller, lower-cost edition using four existing venues in a compact area.
The hosting plan was backed by the Scottish Government and promoted as a more sustainable model that reduced costs while maintaining international competition standards.
