Leonard Wa Muthende, popularly known as “Leo,” is an entrepreneur and political figure from Kianthawa village in Nthawa ward, Mbeere North Sub-county.
Following Geoffrey Ruku’s appointment as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Leo announced his intention to contest the Mbeere North parliamentary seat in the November 2025 by-election.
Educational Background
Leo attended Siakago Primary School and later St. Paul’s Kevote High School.
His academic performance earned him support from organizations such as Plan International, which sponsored his education.
He earned a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Nairobi, graduating with First Class Honors.
He subsequently worked with several medical and pharmaceutical companies, gaining experience in health systems and pharmaceutical management.
Leornard Wa Muthende Career and Political Journey
In 2017, he contested for the Embu gubernatorial seat but was defeated by the incumbent, Martin Wambora.
After the election, he focused on his businesses while remaining involved in development initiatives.
In 2022, he supported Geoffrey Ruku for Mbeere North MP and William Ruto for President.

In 2006, he co-founded his first company in the pharmaceutical industry.
Additionally, in 2023, he founded two additional firms focused on medical equipment and hospital systems.
Mbeere North By-Election
Leo has been active in Mbeere North politics and has announced his intention to contest the parliamentary seat in the upcoming Mbeere North by-election.
He will run under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), led by President William Ruto, with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki spearheading the campaigns.
His main rival, Newton Karish, will vie under the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

Campaign Period
During his campaign period, the United Opposition called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to disqualify Leo Wa Muthende.
Opposition leaders accused him of failing to meet the integrity requirements outlined in Chapter Six of the Constitution.
Documents attributed to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) indicated that Leo, formerly known as Leonard Muriuki Njeru before lawfully changing his name, was linked to a failed Ksh643 million oxygen generation plant project.
