In Kenya, the minimum academic requirement to join the police service is typically a D+ in the KCSE. But Chief Inspector Dr. Margaret Ong’ale has by far surpassed that threshold, earning her first PhD and now pursuing a second.
Chief Inspector Dr. Margaret Awino Ong’ale has built a remarkable career combining public service and academic excellence.
The National Police Service (NPS) has acknowledged her outstanding academic performance, describing it as a remarkable achievement.
Margaret Ong’ale Career Background
She joined the National Police Service in August 2008 as a Police Constable and rose steadily through the ranks, becoming Inspector of Police in November 2019 and Chief Inspector in July 2023.
Margaret currently serves as the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) at DCI Imenti Central, where she leads investigations, intelligence operations, and administrative functions.
Education Background
While advancing in the service, Dr. Ong’ale also dedicated herself to exceptional academic pursuits.
She began with a Diploma in Crime Management and Prevention in 2013, and later completed a Bachelor of Arts in Security Management and Police Studies, graduating with First-Class Honours in 2017.
Additionally, Margaret completed a Master’s degree in 2021 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Science in 2022.
Her academic journey reached its peak in August 2025, when she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration from Mount Kenya University.
Currently, she is pursuing a second doctorate in International Relations and Diplomacy at Kenyatta University.
Dr. Ong’ale is also a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and has completed the Senior Management Course at the Kenya School of Government.

According to the Chief Inspector, completing a PhD has not only reshaped her approach to service by deepening her analytical and strategic thinking but also reinforced her reliance on evidence-based decision-making and broadened her understanding of ethics, institutional reform, and policy development.
Balancing a demanding policing career with rigorous academic pursuits has required her to have exceptional discipline, focus, and time management.
