Early Life & Background
Abdul Rahim Dawood’s parents were Asian Kenyans who settled in the Igembe North area, running businesses such as a construction materials shop and a petrol station.
Raised in humble circumstances, his early home was a wooden hut, where Dawood embraced the Meru cultural identity, learning to speak and write in Kimeru, which would later define his inclusive political appeal.
Education
He began his early schooling at Meru Primary School in 1970, completing the first four years of primary education before moving to the United Kingdom in 1974, where he attended New Bury School for one year.
In 1975, he returned to Kenya and rejoined Meru Primary School, completing his primary studies in 1976 and earning the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE).
For his secondary education, Dawood joined the Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi, in 1977, where he pursued his ‘O’ Level studies, successfully completing the Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE) in 1980.
He then advanced to ‘A’ Levels at the same institution, earning the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) in 1982.
In 2008, he enrolled at Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) for a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree in Accounts and Finance, graduating in 2011.
He proceeded to undertake a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance at the same university, which he successfully completed in 2013.
His unique position as a minority representative in a largely homogenous region continues to make him a strong symbol of diversity and inclusion in Kenya’s political landscape.
Professional career
His political journey began in 2007, when he successfully contested the seat of Councillor for Meru Municipality’s Commercial Ward.
In 2013, Dawood took a bold step and contested for the North Imenti Constituency Parliamentary seat under the Alliance Party of Kenya (APK).
He won and became the first Kenyan of Asian descent to be elected as an MP in the Meru region.
He successfully defended his seat in 2017, this time under the Jubilee Party, continuing his focus on infrastructure development, education support, and healthcare improvement in North Imenti.
In the 2022 General Election, Dawood once again secured re-election, this time as an Independent Candidate, after parting ways with Jubilee.
