Biography
Kariuki Ngari is the Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered (StanChart) Kenya. He was appointed to the Board in March 2019.
Education
Kariuki earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Economics and Sociology from the University of Nairobi, where he was actively involved in Rotaract and rugby from 1987 to 1990.
Afterwards he completed the Leadership for the Cutting-Edge program at GIBS Business School (Gordon Institute of Business Science) in 2005.
Thereafter, he advanced his education with Executive Management training at INSEAD Business School in Singapore in 2012 and participated in the Leading Across Boundaries program at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, in 2011.
Kariuki Ngari Experience
Kariuki has 30 years of banking experience. He was instrumental in transforming the Consumer Banking divisions of Standard Chartered Bank Kenya and the Africa Region.
Prior to his current role, he was the Global Head, Retail Distribution for Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore.
He was influential in formulating global strategies in building the future of Retail Branch and Voice and Virtual landscapes through digitization of the physical channels.
Kariuki was the Regional Head of Retail Clients, Africa between 2013 and 2015, and an Executive Director of Standard Chartered Bank Kenya from 2009 to 2013.
He has also held senior positions at Absa Bank Kenya PLC. Kariuki serves as a non-executive director on the board of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda and as a director on the boards of Tawi Fresh Kenya Limited and Solvezy Technology Kenya Limited.
He sits on the Board of the UN Global Compact and is a director on various other Standard Chartered Bank Kenya subsidiary Boards.
Other Positions Held
Prior to his current role, he was the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Limited from February 2019 to April 2024, a tenure lasting over five years.
His journey with Standard Chartered spans a decade, including roles such as Global Head of Retail Distribution in Singapore from October 2015 to December 2018 and Regional Head of Retail Banking for Africa from April 2013 to September 2015.
During this period, he also served as a Non-Executive Director at the Bank.
Earlier in his career, he was the Retail Head for Africa, managing ten countries with a balance sheet exceeding $2 billion, and Executive Director for Kenya and Head of Consumer Banking for East Africa from January 2009 to March 2013.
Before joining Standard Chartered, he was the Director of Retail Banking at Barclays, overseeing the Consumer Banking business for Kenya and East Africa from June 2004 to December 2008.
