Biography
Margaret Kenyatta is the former First lady of the Republic of Kenya and wife to the fourth president of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta.
Margaret garnered international acclaim for her Beyond Zero Campaign, a nationwide grassroots health initiative focused on eliminating maternal mortality rates.
Through the First Lady Marathon, she continues to build upon her family’s legacy as a prominent leader.

Margaret Wanjiru Gakuo was born to a Kenyan father, Njuguna Gakuo, a former director of the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC), and a German mother, Magdalena.
Her father, a graduate of Alliance High School, served as Secretary of the East African Tobacco Company before his appointment as Director General of the East African Railways and Harbours in September 1964.
He held the position till 1976, that was 12 years of active service. Prior to that, he had lectured at some international universities outside the country.
Education
Margaret attended Kianda School and St. Andrews School in Molo, Kenya, before earning a Bachelor of Education from Kenyatta University.
Achievements
During her tenure as First Lady, Margaret actively voiced her opinions on various social issues in Kenya, including maternal and child health. Her advocacy led to the establishment of a mother-baby hospital unit named in her honor.
Additionally, she has promoted cancer prevention by advocating for early screening of breast, cervical, and prostate cancers and has addressed diabetes by encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
Likewise, she strongly supports various educational and charitable programs in Kenya, including the opening of WE Charity College in Narok County and the promotion of the conservation of historic sites and monuments.
One of Margaret’s notable achievements was being named Kenya Person of the Year on 24 October 2014.
In addition to her political involvement, she is also an alumna of Kianda School, a Catholic girls’ school.
