Early life and educational background

Miraj Abdillahi Abdulrahman was born in 1991 in Barsheba, Kisauni Constituency, Mombasa County, where she was raised by her mother after her parents separated.

She began her education at Bondeni Primary School in Mombasa, where she studied from 1999 to 2006 and completed her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

In 2007, she joined Coast Girls High School, also in Mombasa, for her secondary education.

During her time there, she faced personal challenges, including dropping out in 2009 while in Form Three due to an early pregnancy.

Despite these hardships, she later returned to school, successfully completing her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2010.

Professional career

After completing her secondary education in 2010, Miraj Abdillahi Abdulrahman ventured into small-scale businesses to support herself and her family. Between 2011 and 2019, she was involved in informal trade, including operating a roadside food vending business selling viazi karai and porridge in Mombasa. During this period, she also worked closely with her mother, who managed a similar food vending enterprise, helping to sustain their household.

Driven by her experiences, Miraj founded Young Girls Ambassadors in 2014, a community-based initiative focused on mentoring teenage girls, advocating for education, and fighting early marriages and teenage pregnancies. This work reflected her commitment to empowering young women who faced challenges similar to her own.

In 2013, she began gaining experience in governance by working as a personal assistant to nominated Senator Emma Mbura, a position she held until 2017.

Between 2020 and 2021, Miraj served as a Liaison Officer at Buxton Point Ltd, where she coordinated community engagement and outreach programs during the implementation of housing and urban renewal projects in Mombasa.

By 2022, she had established herself as a grassroots mobilizer and advocate, combining her background in community service, governance support, and professional liaison work to transition into formal politics.

Political Career

Miraj Abdillahi Abdulrahman began her political journey in 2013, when she contested the Tononoka Ward MCA seat in Mombasa County on a United Democratic Forum (UDF) Party ticket.

Although unsuccessful, the experience introduced her to grassroots politics and public service.

From 2013 to 2017, she worked closely with Nominated Senator Emma Mbura as her personal assistant, gaining valuable exposure to legislative affairs, constituency engagement, and community mobilization.

In the 2017 general election, Miraj vied for the Mombasa Woman Representative position under the Jubilee Party, but she did not make it to the ballot.

This setback did not deter her political ambitions, and she continued to strengthen her networks and community presence.

Ahead of the 2022 general election, Miraj aligned herself with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a key party in the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

In July 2022, UDA nominated her to the Senate to represent women and marginalized groups. She was officially sworn in as a Nominated Senator on 16 August 2022.

Upon joining the 13th Parliament, she was elected Vice Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) and appointed as a member of the Senate Committee on Roads, Transportation, and Housing, and the Committee on Labour and Social Welfare.

In 2023, she sponsored two significant pieces of legislation: the Care and Protection of Child Parents Bill (Senate Bill No. 29 of 2023), which addresses the rights and welfare of teenage mothers, and the County Hall of Fame Bill (Senate Bill No. 18 of 2023), aimed at recognizing outstanding contributions by citizens at the county level.

Through her Senate work, Miraj has emerged as a strong advocate for youth empowerment, gender equality, and social welfare, steadily building her profile as one of Mombasa’s rising political leaders.
