Rasik Kantaria is one of Kenya’s most influential and accomplished business entrepreneurs.
In December 2025, he became Kenya’s first dollar billionaire according to Billionaires of Africa.
Kantaria is the founder and chairman of Prime Bank Limited and the current owner of Yaya Centre located in Kilimani, Nairobi.
A Kantaria-led hospitality consortium acquired the mall from the family of former Minister Nicholas Biwott in a private transaction.
He has substantial investments in the financial sector, spanning three African countries, namely Kenya, Malawi, and Botswana, which makes him one of the wealthiest men in Kenya.
Rasik Kantaria’s Journey to Wealth
Rasik Kantaria’s story traces back to 1896, when his grandfather arrived in Kenya from India at just 16 years old.
Growing up in Limuru, Kiambu County, Kantaria spent his early years helping run a small family shop with his brother.
The pair later ventured into business together, starting with a sawmill and charcoal enterprise before expanding into the automotive sector in Nairobi.
Business Ventures
Among their early ventures were Empire Auto Spares and the East African Building Society, as well as an aluminium manufacturing plant they set up in Mombasa in 1958.
Kantaria’s entrepreneurial reach eventually extended beyond Kenya. In 1995, he joined forces with Malawian tycoon Hitesh Anadkat to found First Merchant Bank Limited in Blantyre.
What began as a modest financial institution has grown into First Capital Bank, now the flagship subsidiary of FMB Capital Holdings.

Kantaria’s stake in the Mauritius-based FMB Capital Holdings has seen extraordinary growth.
According to data from Billionaires.Africa, the value of his shareholding surged by nearly $900 million this year alone, boosted by strong earnings and an upswing on the Malawi Stock Exchange. By 2024.
Through investments, he reached a milestone, becoming the first Kenyan businessman with a confirmed net worth of over $1 billion.

Growing Empire
In Kenya, Kantaria is best known as the founder and Chairman of Prime Bank Limited and Prime Capital Holdings Limited institutions that have become cornerstones of private banking in the country.
He also chairs Tausi Assurance Company Limited, deepening his influence within the local financial services sector.
Armed with an Economics degree from London, Kantaria has served in leadership roles across tourism, real estate, manufacturing, and finance.
He previously sat on the board of the Deposit Protection Fund under the Central Bank of Kenya and continues to guide several companies across East and Southern Africa.
Beyond business, he has been honoured with an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from The United Graduate College & Seminary in the United States.
He is also a recipient of the Head of State’s Commendation (HSC) from President William Ruto in recognition of his service to the nation.

He is a longstanding Rotarian and has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humanities Degree by The United Graduate College & Seminary for his outstanding contribution to humanity.
He holds a Bachelor of Economics degree from London.
