The tragic deaths of two Form Four students at Ramba Boys’ High School in Siaya County have sparked a call for a nationwide audit of school infrastructure by Kisumu Senator Prof Tom Ojienda.
While requesting a Statement from the Standing Committee on Education, Senator Ojienda demanded immediate government action and accountability.
Consequently, the senator has called for a full nationwide audit of sanitation and infrastructure in learning institutions to assess safety compliance.
Additionally, he has called for an immediate government response to the tragedy at Ramba Boys High School and the measures taken by the Ministry of Education to support the affected families.
Senator Ojienda has also demanded accountability for negligence leading to the collapse and institutional reforms to ensure such a preventable loss of life never happens again.

Sanor Ojienda Raises Concerns Over Neglect of Rural Schools
On the other hand, the Senator highlighted how rural schools continue to bear the brunt of neglect, calling for a deliberate strategy to upgrade sanitation facilities across all counties.
Also, extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and reiterated the urgent need to prioritize student safety in all learning institutions.
On March 22, 2025, a septic tank within the school compound collapsed while students were standing on it, killing two and seriously injuring two others
Reports indicated that the students had been standing on the tank along with others when it crashed, fatally trapping them and seriously injuring two more.
Consequently, students held protests demanding the immediate transfer of their school principal. The demonstrations quickly intensified, with students burning down the security house near the school’s main gate.
The unrest followed an indefinite closure of the institution
However, on Monday, May 7, Dr. Patrick Odhiambo was appointed as the new Chief Principal of the institution.

Body Found in School Latrine
In a separate incident, a dismembered body was found in a latrine at Evojo Primary School in Vihiga County on Tuesday, May 6 forcing the administration to shut down the school indefinitely.
Deputy Head teacher of Oscar Changilwa confirmed the incident, stating that the school resumed learning on May 5, after a break to bury the head teacher.
However, one child went to relieve himself and came back to report that he had seen a human head in the latrine.
“We are deeply saddened that such an incident has occurred. We had just resumed school yesterday after burying the head teacher,” Changilwa said.
