Police have impounded another famous matatu after flouting traffic rules.
The matatu, famously known as ‘Jaw Breaker’ was captured in a viral video breaking the traffic rules and endangering the lives of those on board.
The matatu that plies the Umoja Nairobi route had seemingly excess passengers and had some people sitting on the roof of the vehicle. Â Loud music could also be heard emanating from the vehicle from a distance.
In a subsequent video doing rounds on social media, the police are seen flashing people outside the matatu and taking up the co-drivers’ seats.
Matatu flouting traffic rules
This comes days after drivers of two famous matatus ‘Ambush’ and ‘Moneyfest’ were impounded for breaking traffic laws.Â
The drivers of the two matatus John Mwangi and Dominic Amaya were apprehended at the Kibera Law Courts. Â Each of them was handed a fine of Ksh50,000 or a jail term not exceeding six months.

The arrests came after an uproar online on the conduct of matatus that ply the Nairobi Rongai route.
Videos online captured the vehicles moving on the wrong side of the road while some passengers were seated on the roofs of the vehicles, posing a risk to other road users.
‘Ambush’ and ‘Moneyfest’ impounded
Other footage captured some rowdy youth recording videos of themselves hanging around the door of one of the vehicles.Â
These videos attracted a lot of criticism with members of the public accusing the authorities of being complacent with enforcing traffic rules.

Following the uproar on Thursday, January 9, 2025, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) issued an update stating that the two vehicles had been impounded and were being held at the Lang’ata Police Station.
One of the vehicles, Moneyfest, has previously been linked to President William Ruto’s son, George Ruto.
Other charges include having TV screens that obscure the driver’s view and having a tinted windscreen and headlamps fitted with an unprescribed front light. These things, according to the police rendered the vehicles unroadworthy.
