Bobi Wine The People’s President film has been nominated for the Documentary Feature Film category for the 96th Oscars Academy Awards.
The film, whose directors Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp’s focus on the Ugandan politician, singer, actor and activist Robert Kyagulanyi popularly known as Bobi Wine was nominated on 21st December.
In a statement, the Academy revealed that the nonfiction film of 2023 had been named among one hundred and sixty-seven films.
“Fifteen films will advance in the Documentary Feature Film category for the 96th Academy Awards.
One hundred sixty-seven films were eligible in the category. Members of the Documentary Branch vote to determine the shortlist and the nominees,” read the statement.

In addition, the Academy noted that the voting will kick off early January 2024 and is expected to run for six days and afterwards nominations for the awards shall be announced towards the end of January.
“Nominations voting begins on Thursday, January 11, 2024, and concludes on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, nominations for the 96th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2024,” read the statement in part.
Likewise, according to the academy, the awards will be held in Hollywood in March 2024 and will also be televised.
“The 96th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide,” said the Academy.

According to the Oscars the films other shortlisted films included the “American Symphony” “Apolonia, Apolonia” “Beyond Utopia” and “Bobi Wine: The People’s President” among others.
Worth noting, in the film Bobi Wine: The People’s President the directors tell the story of the titular Ugandan pop singer-turned politician, who dared to challenge his country’s dictator for leadership of Uganda.

The film Bobi Wine: The People’s President premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and won prizes at Hamptons International Film Festival, and Independent Film Festival of Boston.
Awards Won by The Film
Likewise, the film has gained international recognition with numerous awards as well as nominations for various prestigious accolades.
On December 12, the film won the 39TH International Documentary Association Documentary Awards and was further nominated in three competitive categories for the Cinema Eye Honors.
Again, the documentary, which is now under the National Geographic, was feted by IDA in honor of Wine’s gist to defending the rights of the ghetto people.

During the virtual ceremony held on Tuesday, December 12, Director Moses Bwayo, the film director, extended gratitude to those integral in crafting the film.
“Thank you for this incredible honor and news. Bobi Wine, the People’s President has been a labor of love, 6 years in the making; this recognition is a blessing and testament to those fighting for freedom, justice and democracy,” said Bwayo.
