Amid government efforts to eliminate banditry attacks and restore peace in Marsabit County, Bubisa community elders on Friday, May 13 surrendered three guns to the area chief Mr. Joseph Jirm.
The firearms surrendered to the chief were two AK-47 assault rifles and a G3 rifle. The elders did this as a form of heeding to the recent peace-call by the state in the insecurity-prone region.
According to a report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the multi-agency teams in Marsabit applauded the move as they urged other elders to emulate the act.
“The sub-county security team comprising of police, DCI and national government officers welcomed the move and urged other elders to emulate the good example set by their Bubisa counterparts,” said the DCI.
Moreover, the government had imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Marsabit County early May 2022 amid a surge in inter-ethnic attacks that disregarded peace initiatives in the region. This move came following the lapse of a 30-day window requested by county leaders to secure reconciliation.
“We are moving in, full blown and very stiff security activity in that sub-county and especially in that sub-location where those illegal activities are happening. Anyone who moves there will be deemed to be an armed, dangerous combatant and the security sector will deal with you that way,” Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i earlier reported.
Furthermore, the CS mentioned that the 30-days 6pm to 6am curfew, with the option of an extension, will run in tandem with a disarmament exercise aiming at illegal guns and ammunition.
