3 University Students Dead in High-speed Crash

Three university students have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident involving a motorcycle and a truck ferrying sand. The three male students from the South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) located in Kwa Vonza, Kitui County, died on the spot following a road accident on Friday, February 22, night.

Preliminary reports indicate that the trio was riding on a motorcycle from Kwa Vonza market to their residence within SEKU when they crashed into the back of a sand truck along the Kwa Vonza – Kitui Road.

According to eyewitnesses, the stalled truck had been parked by the roadside due to a mechanical failure.

SEKU students killed on the spot after horrific crash

Police officers from the Kwa Vonza Police Station arrived at the accident scene and launched an investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased have been taken by the officers to the Kitui Hospital mortuary as investigations continue.

The crash happened just hours after several Police officers were injured in a road accident while traveling on Friday morning to the funeral of Mzee Kingi Mwaruwa Mkweha, the father of Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, at Kamale Village in Magarini Sub-County, Kilifi County. 

Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina revealed details of the accident while pleading for intervention to fix roads in the county during the burial ceremony.

Ole Kina stated that nearly 10 officers had been injured and urged President Ruto to ensure that the road leading to Kamale village in Magarini was tarmacked.

“I used that road where there is a head-on collision accident that has occurred, about 10 Police officers have been injured while others were affected by the dust,” said Ole Kina.

Four students killed in road crash

The two Friday accidents are among road accidents reported this year that have left behind casualties and fatalities.

Earlier in February, six people, among them four students from Dr Aggrey Boys’ High School in Wundanyi constituency, Taita Taveta County, died after the minibus they were travelling in was involved in an accident.

The students were returning home after a second fire incident at their school, which forced the school administration to close the institution and send the students home.

Additionally, the driver of the minibus and a parent who had gone to pick up their child from the school also lost their lives.
