Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba has pledged to support Alex Otieno, a 13-year-old from Nyalenda slums in Kisumu City.
In a statement on May 26, Namwamba narrated his encounter with Otieno while heading for a function in Butula, Busia County
The CS explained that the 7th grade boy captured his attention through his musical talent. He therefore requested his friend, Dr. Osborne Mabulu, to take the boy to his home, to know his family and support his talent as he 3was rushing to an event.
“This early afternoon in Kisumu City, I run into 13-year-old Alex Otieno, who blows me away with his gift of the musical,” said the CS.
Later, Dr Osborne found out that Otieno is his family’s bread winner and supports his parents and siblings’ financial needs.
Otieno’s Family Troubles
Namwamba explained that Otieno’s father was diagnosed with kidney failure and is currently bedridden while his mother is unemployed with a three-week-old baby.
“And what does Daktari find out deep in Nyalenda? Otieno, a 13-year-old 7th grader, is the sole family breadwinner. The dad is bedridden with kidney failure. The mom is a housewife and got a newborn baby only three weeks ago,” the CS revealed.

The CS further highlighted that the family’s rent is overdue, they are struggling to feed, and the health status is also deplorable.
According to Namwamba, meeting Otieno just before the launch of Kenya’s national talent edition dubbed ‘WhozNext’ was God’s plan and not a mere coincidence.
“Good people, God yupo. And He sends us in his own way and his own time to act and serve here on earth, through little acts of kindness,” he said.

Namwamba New Son
In a video seen by The Kenya Times, Otieno showcased his talent singing as the CS cheered him on.
Namwamba said he will take care of Otieno’s family and take him as his own son.
The CS said he already informed his 13-year-old son that God has given him a new brother of the same age.
“Otieno is now my boy, and his family is my family. I have told my 13-year-old son Che that God just handed him a 13-year-old brother! For when He speak, we must listen. When He command, we must act,” he said.
