Counter Terrorism Policing Kenya has announced that its security agencies have foiled a major terror attack allegedly planned by Al-Shabaab militants in Nairobi.
In a statement on February 18, the Counter Terrorism Policing Kenya said the Al-Shabaab suspects had planned to execute the attack during the month of Ramadhan and were also exploring the possibility of kidnapping foreigners and hijacking vehicles.
“Plans by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab to kill many Kenyans in Nairobi have once again been foiled by the intelligence agency,” read part of the statement.
The foiled plot followed months of surveillance and covert intelligence operations targeting a suspected terror network operating within the Dadaab refugee camps.
This culminated in the recovery of a cache of arms and ammunition.

The Counter Terrorism Agency reported that the seized items included 600 bullets, pistols, grenades, explosives and drugs, which were allegedly destined for targets in Nairobi.
Further, the agency assured the public that Nairobi remains safe due to the dedication of security officers who spend long hours tracking down dangerous terrorists and criminals.
“Nairobi remains safe because of the brave young men and women in our security agencies who spend long hours tracking down dangerous terrorists and criminals,” read part of the statement.

Al-Shabaab Terror Attacks
In December 2025, Kenyan police foiled an overnight attack by Al-Shabaab militants on a compound in Elwak housing Chinese road workers.
The attack unfolded at about 1.15 am when an estimated 40 suspected Al-Shabaab militants attempted to breach the compound, located roughly one kilometre north-west of Elwak Police Station.
Officers stationed at the facility immediately engaged the attackers, resulting in a fierce gunfight that lasted about 90 minutes.
The militants entered Elwak Town via border routes from the Buraache area, arriving in four vehicles before positioning themselves opposite the compound’s main gate.
Armed with AK-47 rifle, rocket-propelled grenades, and a directional mine, the attackers blew up the main gate and damaged sections of the perimeter wall in an apparent attempt to breach the compound.

Kenya Faces Terror Attacks
Kenya has faced repeated al-Shabaab terror attacks since it deployed troops to Somalia in 2011 under the African Union Mission, now the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
The terrorist group has carried out cross-border ambushes, roadside bombings mainly targeting border police patrols, and raids on remote police posts.
Garissa, Mandera and Wajir counties, bordering Somalia, remain the most affected.
