Ministry of Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary (CS) nominee Alfred Mutua has clarified the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of his show Cobra Squad.
Speaking during his vetting session on Sunday, August 4, Mutua addressed questions regarding the program’s perceived decline, directed at him by Saboti MP Caleb Amisi.
Amisi while pointing out Mutua’s past failed initiatives during his 20-year stint in government, brought up the show’s perceived flop.
“You later said that you want to rejuvenate the entertainment industry and started the show “Cobra Squad” as part of this effort to revitalize the arts and music industry.”
“However, the show performed poorly and later disappeared from the screens,” said Amisi.
Mutua Highlights the Show’s Success
In response, Mutua explained that Cobra Squad was a personal project that achieved significant success.
He pointed out that the show’s earnings enabled him to purchase a house in Nairobi and to produce additional programs through his production company.

“Cobra squad was a personal initiative, very successful, I bought my house in Nairobi with proceeds from Cobra Squad and went on to produce many other shows like “Beba Beba” and many other shows that my company still produces,” said Mutua.
Additionally, Mutua highlighted that Cobra Squad was well-received not only in Kenya but also across Africa, where he continues to receive royalties from its broadcast in countries like Zambia and Tanzania.
“Cobra Squad was very successful even across Africa and even today I still get royalties from it being shown in Zambia, Tanzania and many other countries,” he added.
Alfred Mutua Reveals Reason Behind Cobra Squad’s Cancellation
However, he revealed that the show faced a devastating setback during its second season when one of its main actors tragically died in the 2009 Nakumatt downtown fire.
This loss prompted the decision to halt production on a planned third season out of respect for the deceased.
Despite claims of the show’s failure, Mutua firmly stated that Cobra Squad was ultimately a success story.

He emphasized that the cancellation was a thoughtful choice made in light of the tragedy, rather than a reflection of the show’s performance.
“During our second season, towards the end one of our main actors unfortunately died in the fire that engulfed the former Nakumatt that was at Moi Avenue, and it was felt that we could not continue with the third season after that tragedy.”
“That is how we stopped Cobra Squad out of respect for the death of our workers and so Mheshimiwa Caleb it was not a failure it was a success,” he explained.
