Labour Cabinet Secretary (CS) Alfred Mutua is in the headlines over a recruitment scam under the Diaspora Jobs Programme dubbed “Kazi Majuu” that saw hundreds of Kenyan youth duped by the very government they voted for.
The Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare summoned Mutua over the programme, which is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection and the National Employment Authority (NEA).
The Committee decided after testimonies from Kenyans who were paid to be given jobs in the Gulf, only to end up with debts.
Mutua has kept out of the ongoing debate regarding the programme, appearing to bury his head in the sand.
He took to his Facebook account and instead posted about the Champions League match between Arsenal and PSG.
Mutua said all football fans were waiting to watch the match and asked Kenyans to give their predictions.
He predicted that Arsenal would win the game, although the reverse happened.
“We are all cheering on Arsenal tonight, yes? Itaisha ngapi ngapi? 3-1,” he wrote. Little did he know that he was opening a can of worms, inviting the wrath of Kenyans.
Kenyans Bash Alfred Mutua
Kenyans were quick to remind the CS of the ongoing investigations by the Senate Committee regarding the Kazi Majuu programme.
Facebook user Mutuku M Justus wondered if Mutua valued football more than the Kenyan youth.
“So, football is more important than the youth of the country. Why did you con them?”
Ole-karei Benard told the CS to focus on refunding the money Kenyans paid to get jobs abroad instead of football.
“You should be working on repaying innocent Kenyans their hard-earned money. If God allows us to have another protest we will make sure you are gone forever,” Benard said.

Similarly, Sam Kum advised Mutua to sort the mess at his Ministry first.
Kobii Katolo also asked Mutua to focus on giving Kenyans jobs instead of rooting for Arsenal.
“Wewe peana kazi si game, hatukuli arsenal,” Kobii Katolo said.
This translates to “You should provide jobs, not games. We don’t eat Arsenal.”
Additionally, Simba Kamau told Mutua to give Kenyans the jobs he promised them,
Kamau said the youth have been suffering on the streets of Nairobi even after getting vetted by the Ministry of Labour for foreign jobs.
“Forget about the European football and focus on getting people jobs. You promised Kenyans Gen-Z jobs in Gulf Countries, even ended up vetting some of them, but are still suffering in the Streets of Nairobi,” Kamau wrote.

Fake Recruitment Agencies
Sylvester Harrison Gathu said the government should stop fake recruitment agencies from operating in Kenya.
He claimed that Kazi Majuu was a scam and asked the CS to refund money collected from Kenyans.
“All fake agencies must stop in Kenya mark my word. Kenyans should be given back their money, simple and clear.Kazi majuu initiative was scam,” Gathu said.
Stephen Mutisya said, “Now after conning poor Kenyans na Kazi majuu Sasa umerudi Kwa mpira, hii ni scam pia.”
This translates to “Now, after conning poor Kenyans with Kazi Majuu, you’re back to football — this is a scam too.”
A section of Kenyans on X including leaders have also been calling for Mutua’s resignation.
Is there any justifiable reason why Alfred Mutua is still a CS in Kenya?” Wondered Lee Makwiny on X. On his part, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale could not believe that Dr. Mutua was still in office as a minister. He stated, “(Alfred Mutua) has he not resigned for the foreign jobs scam?”
