Electric vehicle startup BasiGo has launched Kenya’s first inter-city electric matatu trips, marking an expansion of the country’s clean public transport network beyond the capital.
In partnership with 4NTE SACCO and Manchester Travellers Coach SACCO, BasiGo is rolling out electric vans on key inter-county routes: Nyahururu–Nyeri, Nyahururu–Nakuru, and Thika–Nairobi.
Each van can travel up to 300 kilometres on a single charge and recharge in just 1.5 hours.
“We are delighted to extend electric mobility beyond Nairobi and electrifying an iconic part of Kenya’s history — the matatu,” said Moses Nderitu, Managing Director, Kenya at BasiGo.
“By partnering with visionary SACCOs like 4NTE and Manchester, we’re showing that electric mobility is not only possible but practical for intercity and inter-county transit.”
The vans are being offered under BasiGo’s Pay-As-You-Drive lease model, an initiative aimed at reducing the cost barrier for operators seeking to electrify their fleets.

Charging stations have already been installed in Nyahururu and Thika to support the pilot.
“This is about embracing innovation and delivering better service to our customers,” said Wilfred Daniel Kimotho, Chairman of 4NTE SACCO.
“This partnership places us at the forefront of a transport revolution which is electric, efficient, and built for the future.”
BasiGo also announced plans to locally assemble the electric vans, a move expected to stimulate job creation and skills development within Kenya’s growing clean energy sector.
Full after-sales support, including maintenance and servicing, will be provided.
The company aims to deploy more than 1,000 electric vans across Kenya in the coming years as part of a broader effort to support the country’s climate goals and create a blueprint for inclusive, sustainable transportation.
