Students at Light Academy School (LIS) in Nairobi have had their IGCSE, AS, and A Level examination results cancelled by Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE).
In an undated letter addressed to school stakeholders, LIS announced the decision by the international examinations body and outlined their plan of action.
LIS management confirmed that upon receiving the news, the school promptly initiated an appeal process, engaging with two legal teams in both Kenya and the UK to assist in the matter.
The school explained that the formal appeal was lodged on August 9, 2024, and that it expects a response from Cambridge regarding the matter within 28 days.
“To assist in this matter, we have engaged two legal teams in Kenya and the UK. The formal appeal was lodged on 09.08.2024, and we anticipate a response from Cambridge within 28 days from that date,” read the letter in part.
LIS Outlines Next Steps School After the Examination Setback
Furthermore, LIS said that it was collaborating with the Kenya Association of International Schools (KAIS) to ensure the best outcome for the affected students, which it notes remains their top priority.
In preparation for all potential scenarios, the school has outlined a comprehensive plan aimed at resolving the issue.

Given the expected duration of the appeal process, LIS has advised students to arrange for retakes of the examinations during the October/November 2024 Exam Series whose application deadline is set on September 14, 2024.
“We believe it is in the best interest of the students to arrange for retakes of the examinations during the October/November 2024 Exam Series,” said the school.
Additionally, the school said that it would cover the full costs of exam registration and preparation for all students retaking the exams.
LIS also said it would organize a comprehensive revision program to ensure that students are thoroughly prepared for the retake examinations, with the costs fully covered by the school.

Also, the school explained that it had identified the Nairobi Academy as suitable center where affected students can sit for the exams as the appeal process continues.
LIS Offers Support to Affected Students
LIS also announced that after the exams, scholarships will be allocated to current Year 12 and 13 students based on their predicted grades for the 2023/2024 academic year.
Recognizing the impact this situation has had on the mental well-being of their students and the wider community; the school said that it would provide counseling services for the affected students and any other members of the LIS community who may need it.

Despite the current challenges, the school expressed its commitment to getting to the bottom of the mater and said that they would engage with external investigators for a thorough review of the situation.
“While we sincerely regret the current situation, we remain confident that we will overcome this challenge and emerge stronger as community,” concluded the letter.
