A Simba Coach bus overturned on the dawn of July 10 along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway at Mlima Kiu.
Video footage obtained by The Kenya Times shows the long-distance passenger bus lying on its side, with distressed passengers being pulled from shattered windows.
Witnesses and bystanders can be seen helping victims as smoke and debris fill the air.
The number of casualties remains unclear as of Thursday morning, though several people are feared injured.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the cause of the accident or confirm any fatalities.
Mlima Kiu, a notoriously steep and winding stretch of road between Emali and Sultan Hamud, has been the site of multiple road accidents in recent years, raising ongoing concerns about safety on the road.
Nairobi-Mombasa Highway Accidents
This follows closely on the heels of a tragic crash that occurred less than a week ago at Mlima Kiu, near Salama town, along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The accident took place on the evening of Friday, July 4, claiming three lives and left several others with serious injuries.
According to reports, a speeding truck lost control while descending the steep Mlima Kiu stretch.
It veered off its lane, first colliding with a private car before plowing into two passenger Nissan matatus headed toward Nairobi.
The collision caused extensive destruction, with the truck reportedly crushing the smaller vehicles and scattering debris across the road.
The deadly crash came just hours after another fatal accident in Mombasa County, where a teacher escorting students died following a crash in the Maasai area along the Taita Taveta-Mombasa highway.
NTSA Accident Reports
According to the latest NTSA report from March 2025, 1,139 people died in road crashes in the first quarter. This is a slight decrease from the 1,166 fatalities in the same period in 2024.

However, the number is still high. Pedestrians are the most vulnerable group, with 420 deaths. Motorcyclists follow, with 301 fatalities.
Other casualties include 189 passengers, 130 pillion passengers, 83 drivers, and 16 pedal cyclists.
Approximately 12 Kenyans lost their lives in road accidents in the 2024/25 financial year.
Nairobi county recorded the highest number of fatalities countrywide between January and March 2025, with a total of 138 deaths.
Most of the fatalities occurred along Thika Superhighway, Mombasa Road, Outering Road and Langata Road.
Counties with low fatalities were Mandera, Marsabit and Samburu which had one fatality in 2025.
