Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) General Kahariri and the Ethiopian military chief held high-level defense talks on August 12 at the Defense Headquarters in Nairobi.
In a statement, the Ministry of Defense said the talks focused on strengthening military cooperation and addressing shared security challenges in the Horn of Africa.
“For Kenya and Ethiopia, their longstanding defense partnership continues to play a significant role in safeguarding shared interests and promoting peace and stability across the Horn of Africa,” the statement read.
The engagement took place during a courtesy call by the Ethiopian Ambassador to Kenya, Ambassador General Bacha Debele Buta, on the Chief of the Defense Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, at the Defense Headquarters in Nairobi.
General Kahariri and Ethiopian Military Chief Defense Talks
According to the Ministry of Defense, General Kahariri and Ambassador General Buta discussed a range of bilateral and regional security matters, with particular attention to cooperation between the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) and the Ethiopian National Defense Force.
The discussions highlighted the importance of sustained coordination between the two countries as they respond to security challenges that extend beyond national borders.
“During the engagement, General Kahariri and Ambassador General Buta discussed a range of bilateral and regional security matters, with emphasis on strengthening cooperation between the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) and the Ethiopian National Defense Force,” the statement confirmed.
Kenya and Ethiopia have maintained a longstanding defense relationship, with the two neighboring countries sharing security interests linked to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

The Ministry said the engagement further demonstrated the strategic importance of the Kenya-Ethiopia defense partnership within the wider regional security framework.
Intelligence and Border Security
Further, the ministry stated that the meeting examined intelligence and information sharing as one of the areas where closer cooperation could strengthen the two countries’ ability to respond to emerging security threats.
General Kahariri and Ambassador General Buta also discussed enhanced operational coordination between the two defense forces.
“Among the key areas explored were structured intelligence and information sharing, enhanced operational coordination and strengthened border security management.”
Border security management was another key area addressed during the engagement. The two officials acknowledged the importance of stronger coordination along the shared border to improve preparedness and help safeguard communities.

The Ministry said timely information exchange and coordinated action remain important as security dynamics across the region continue to evolve.
Strengthening Military Coordination
Beyond immediate security concerns, the discussions focused on improving interoperability between the KDF and the Ethiopian National Defense Force through continued professional interaction, joint initiatives and the exchange of expertise.
The Ministry of Defense said sustained cooperation can strengthen the ability of both defense forces to respond to common security challenges while building mutual confidence and institutional ties.
The engagement also highlighted the role of defense diplomacy in supporting regional security by providing opportunities for neighboring countries to coordinate their responses and strengthen military relationships.
General Kahariri and Ambassador General Buta reaffirmed the importance of maintaining regular high-level engagements between Kenya and Ethiopia.
They also emphasized continued coordination between the two countries’ defense establishments in areas including border security, operational preparedness, and defense cooperation.
