The Church, through the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK), has called on President William Ruto to take decisive steps to restore trust among the young people and steer the country away from growing instability.
In a press statement dated July 9, IRCK Chairman Rt. Rev. Willybard Largho expressed concern over the current state of the nation, citing political power struggles and rising state violence.
The council said the country is in a “sad and dangerous state,” with the ruling elite fighting to gain and protect political and economic power at the expense of national peace.
Church addresses the current state of the country
“The state, through ineptitude or deliberate provocations, has degenerated what started as an expression of discontent with the Finance Bill 2024 into a murderous chaos characterised by incessant demonstrations, destruction of property and public service facilities, abductions, forced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings. We cannot continue like this as a nation,” read part of the statement.
The leaders urged President Ruto to restore public trust by ensuring that senior government officials involved in violence and corruption face prosecution.
They also warned politicians to stop using religion and ethnicity for political mobilisation and called for strict adherence to the Constitution and the rule of law.
The council further challenged constitutional commissions to take action against individuals misusing public office and security personnel for political interests.
IRCK proposed the formation of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate all deaths that occurred during the anti-Finance Bill protests since June 2024.

They said the truth must be established as a foundation for peace and national healing.
“We must as a nation build our future on a platform of truth,” the statement added.

“On our part, we are ready and willing to offer mediation between the government, the youth and all other actors to promote peaceful coexistence and understanding,” IRCK promised.
“As Kenyans, we must not allow our nation to descend into anarchy. Let us be inspired by the message from the holy scriptures,” the statement added.
In addition, the Council called on Kenyans to reject violence and use lawful means to address the country’s social and economic challenges.
