The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) ranked Citizen TV the most watched television station, tramping over 17 other local stations in its latest ranking.
In the State of the Media Report 2024 released on May 2, Citizen TV retained its position at the top with 35 percent viewership.
The Nation Television (NTV) followed closely with 11 percent viewership, climbing one position higher compared to the 2023 statistics, and kicking out the Kenya Broadcating Corporation (KBC) from the second position.
At the same time, the report detailed that KTN home and KTN news took the third and fourth respectively with 8 percent and 7 percent.
“Citizen TV emerged as the most-watched Television Station in the past one week to the survey, commanding a substantial viewership of 35% in both 2023 and 2022. It was followed by NTV with 11% of viewership, and KTN Home with 8%,” the report detailed.

Other Media Houses on the Media Council List
On the other hand, K24 viewership increased from 5 percent in 2022 to 7 percent in 2023 while KBC’s viewership decreased from 12 percent to 7 percent over the same period.
Other popular stations ranked in the report include Inooro TV which had six percent (6%), TV 47 with five percent (5%), and Ramogi TV with three percent (3%).
Also, Maisha Magic was ranked position 10 with three percent (3%) viewership, Kameme TV 11th with two percent (2%) viewership, Mzalendo TV 12th with one percent (1%) viewership and Kass Tv with one percent viewership.
In addition, the report detailed that majority of Kenyans forty five percent (45%), access TV content through set top boxes, followed by digital TV apps which scored twenty four percent (24%).
The State of the Media Report 2024 revealed that nineteen percent (19%) of Kenyans access TV through online streaming platforms while another eleven percent (11%) use satellite and cables.

Most Listened to Radio Stations
Radio Citizen topped the charts of radio stations listened to with 22% followed by Radio Jambo and Radio Maisha with 14% and 11% respectively.
Further, Milele FM came third with six percent 6% while Radio 47, Inooro FM and Classic FM tied at 5%.
Ramogi FM was ranked at 4%, Kameme FM and Radio Taifa stood at 3% while Kiss 100, Musyi FM, KBC English FM and Kass FM all have 2%.
Also in the list is Mulembe FM, Star FM, Egesa FM, and NRG Radio with 1%.
Problems Facing Journalists
MCK reported that 19% of journalists are threatened or intimidated by the government and state officials. This is closely followed by poor or lack of pay by media owners which stands at 18%.
Speaking during the World Press Freedom Day 2024, Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) Secretary General Erick Oduor urged media owners to prioritize the issues affecting journalists including payment of salaries.
Further, Oduor gave examples of media houses which have not paid their journalists adding that the Union will meet with the ministry to fix the minimum wage pay of its members.
Besides, the changes digital media and consumers behavior patterns are third and fourth with 8% and 7% respectively.
