Police Constable James Mukhwana has revealed the role Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police Eliud Lagat played leading to the death of Homa Bay teacher Albert Ojwang.
Speaking in court on Monday, June 16, Mukhwana said that DIG Lagat made orders through Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam, for Ojwang to be disciplined.
“Ojwang’ was not supposed to be killed, it was only meant to be a disciplining. The order came from OCS Taalam, who received instructions from DIG Lagat.
“My condolences to the family of Ojwang’. May God comfort you,” said Mukhwana.

Mukhwana Narrates the Order of Events on the Fateful Day
According to Constable Mukhwana, when the call came in, he was instructed to select a few suspects from cells to teach Ojwang a lesson.
Further, when he asked what would happen if things went too far, he was reassured that he was only a low-ranking officer and nothing would come back to haunt him.
Additionally, he was threatened that he would get into trouble if he failed to follow the orders.
“There are orders from DIG Lagat, DCI officers are bringing in someone at 8:00 AM. Go to the cell and choose suspects to discipline him,” he was instructed.
At 9:00 PM, a black Subaru arrived at the station with a suspect in hand cuffs who was confirmed to be Albert Ojwang by the OCS.

Albert Ojwang’s Death and Arrests
At 9:20 PM, Ojwang was taken to the cells and his punishment began.
“I had screams from the last cell and rushed there. Ojwang was bleeding from his mouth. He was sitting with his back against the wall,” narrated Mukhwana.
At 10:00 PM, Mukhwana asked his colleagues to rush Ojwang to the hospital for checkup and left. however, the following day he received a phone call from other officers that Ojwang had died.
Mukhwana also revealed that on June 11, he was summoned to the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) offices to issue a statement.
However, at the time, they had all agreed to lie about what happened, but his colleagues had thrown him under the bus and put the blame on him.
On June 12, he went back to IPOA to give another statement but was arrested immediately, and he later issued his true statement.
