The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the relocation of officers who were stationed at Mawego Police Station following an arson attack on Thursday, July 3, arson attack linked to the controversial death of Albert Ojwang.
The police post, located in Homa Bay County, was set ablaze during Ojwang’s funeral reception, with residents accusing officers of being involved in his death.
Ojwang was reportedly picked up from his home by police officers and was last seen alive at Mawego Police Station before being transferred to Nairobi Central Police Station.
He later died in custody under unclear circumstances. Reports alleging torture have sparked public outrage and triggered a violent response, which led to the torching of the police station.
The arson has forced the NPS to redeploy officers from Mawego to Kendu Bay Police Station.
Mawego destruction confirmed
While the NPS is yet to issue an official statement, investigations into the incident and the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death have commenced.
The National Police Service has indicated that any reconstruction of the station will depend on ongoing consultations with residents.
A senior officer speaking to Citizen TV on condition of anonymity said a review is underway to determine whether the community still requires police presence.

“If residents deem it necessary, a rebuild may be considered, though the cost will likely fall on the community itself,” he said.
Preliminary findings will inform whether the station will be rebuilt or permanently shut down.
Leaders Defend Residents as further investigations follow
During the burial, several political leaders defended the residents against blame for the torching of the station.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga dismissed claims and media reports that Mawego residents were behind the violence.

The arson occurred during Ojwang’s funeral reception, when an enraged crowd descended on the station, setting it ablaze.
Ojwang had reportedly been picked up from his home by police and was last seen alive at Mawego Police Station.
As investigations continue, the NPS has assured the public that all officers involved in Ojwang’s arrest and detention will be questioned.
