National Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) John Mbadi has removed Nelson Havi from his position as chairperson of the Retirement Benefits Authority.
In a notice dated July 29, Prof. Philip Kaloki was appointed as the Chairperson of the Board of the Retirement Benefits Authority.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6(1) of the Retirement Benefits Act, the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning appoints—Prof. Philip Kaloki for the Position of Chairperson,” read part of the notice.
Philip Kaloki shall serve a three-year term, effective 30th July 2025.
Philip Kaloki Replaces Nelson Havi
Havi was officially appointed as the Chairperson of the RBA Board of Directors on February 10, 2023, following a gazette notice by former Treasury CS Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u.
His appointment was for a three-year tenure and took effect immediately on that date.
He replaced Abdirahin H. Abdi and was supposed to serve until February 2025 based on the tenure and date of appointment.
Kaloki Educational Background
Philip Kaloki began his education at Molemuni Primary School before proceeding to Kilundu Day High School and later Mutonguni High School in Kitui.
He pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Mary Hardin–Baylor in Texas, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Finance and Economics between 1982 and 1986.
He later obtained an MBA from Dallas Baptist University and went on to earn a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Nairobi.

Philip Kaloki’s Political Career
Philip Kaloki was the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Kibwezi from 2008 to 2013.
As a Member of Parliament, Prof. Philip Kaloki served in several key committees between 2008 and 2012. He was the Vice Chair of the Departmental Committee on Finance, Planning and Trade, and a member of both the Procedure and House Rules Committee (S.O. 191) and the Speaker’s Committee (S.O. 194).
Moreover, in 2022, he was nominated as the running mate to Polycarp Igathe in the Nairobi gubernatorial race.
In 2027, Kaloki resigned as the Chairman of the KMTC Board of Directors.

Nelson Havi
Havi is a distinguished lawyer who served as the 49th President of the Law Society of Kenya, and he is a senior partner at Havi & Company Advocates.
He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree from the University of London. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).
