Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who died in India on the morning of Wednesday, October 15, 2025, is being honored with a state funeral service at Nyayo Stadium.
The state funeral has attracted several dignitaries from Kenya and across the world.
Among those attending the former Prime Minister’s state funeral are current and former heads of state, led by President William Ruto.
Other heads of state present include the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and the President of Ethiopia, Taye Atske Selassie.
List of Heads of State Attending the Funeral Service of Raila
Former heads of state who have attended Odinga’s funeral include former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete.
For those unable to attend in person, several leaders sent representatives. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu sent Vice President Philip Mpango; South Sudan President Salva Kiir was represented by Vice President Rebecca Nyandeng Garang; while Rwandan President Paul Kagame sent Rwanda’s Minister of Interior, Dr. Vincent Biruta.

Besides President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, other notable figures who attended the former Prime Minister’s state funeral service include Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Chief of Defence Forces Charles Kahariri, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Mining CS Hassan Joho, Roads and Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen, and ICT CS William Kabogo.
Opposition leaders in attendance included former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, PLP leader Martha Karua, former Public Service CS Justin Muturi, DAP–K leader Eugene Wamalwa, and former UNCTAD Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi.
Other Dignitaries Who Attended
After the state funeral service, the public will be allowed to view the former Prime Minister’s body at 12:00 p.m. The body will then be taken back to Lee Funeral Home before being moved to his Karen residence for an overnight vigil.
On Saturday, October 18, 2025, the body will be flown to Kisumu, where it will be available for public viewing at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium. A motorcade will later transport the body to his rural home in Bondo for a final overnight stay.
On Sunday, October 19, 2025, Raila Odinga will be laid to rest at his Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County, in a ceremony that will follow Anglican Church traditions.

Raila Odinga died after suffering cardiac arrest on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the age of 80. He had been in India receiving Ayurvedic treatment for pre-existing health conditions. Odinga reportedly collapsed during a morning walk at the Ayurvedic wellness facility where he was recuperating.
He was rushed to the nearby Devamatha Hospital, where medical staff performed CPR and other resuscitation measures. Despite their efforts, Odinga was pronounced dead at around 7:30 a.m.
