Former Prime Minister of Tanzania Edward Ngoyai Lowassa has died while receiving treatment at Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute.
Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu announced his demise in a statement on Saturday, February 10, eulogizing him as a brave and dedicated leader.
Suluhu detailed that Lowassa had served the country for more than 35 years, noting that he began his service while in the army before rising through the ranks and getting into politics.
“It is with great sadness that I have received the news of the passing of former Prime Minister Edward Ngoyai Lowassa.
“Honourable Lowassa served this nation in various capacities for more than 3 years. He began his service in the Tanzanian army, the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), as a member of parliament, a minister in various ministries and as the prime minister,” Suluhu said.
Suluhu’s Message to Lowassa’s Family
Suluhu eulogized the former prime minister as a leader who was dedicated to the service of the nation. She sent her condolence to Lowassa’s widow Regina Lowassa and his children.
“I want to send my condolence to his widow Mama Regina Lowassa and his children honourable Monduli Member of Parliament Fredrick Lowassa and his younger siblings.

“I extend my condolence to his family, friends and the citizens of Tanzania for this heavy burden,” she added.
Additionally, Suluhu indicated that she spoke to the family and assured them of her support in this difficult time. She also encouraged them to rely on God and shared the word of God with them.
Former Tanzania Prime Minister Edward Lowassa Career
Lowassa began his political career in 2005 under former President Jakaya Kiwete, serving as prime minister until 2008.
However, he resigned from the position, after which Kikwete dissolved his cabinet before Mizengo Pinda took over the position.

Lowassa, who was in the main opposition party Chama Cha Mapinduzi, then later defected from the party and launched a presidential bid against the late former President John Magufuli.
However, he lost and rejoined Chama Cha Mapinduci in 2019, leaving his party Chama Cha Demokrasia.
Lowassa was 70 years old when he passed on.
