Safaricom Ethiopia, on July 1, announced that it now serves 10 million 90-day active customers, a major milestone achieved within four years of acquiring its operational license.
On a press release dated June 1, Peter Ndegwa, the Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom PLC, and Wim Vanhelleputte, the Ethiopian Chief Executive Officer, confirmed that the development signals the rapid adoption of its mobile and digital services across the country, highlighting the firm’s strong market presence in Ethiopia.
The company views this milestone as a sign of growing consumer trust and a step toward its broader vision of supporting Ethiopia’s digital transformation through inclusive and high-quality connectivity.
“Behind each SIM card there is an individual, a family, a business, and a future,” said Wim Vanhelleputte, Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom Ethiopia.
Massive Investment in Connectivity Infrastructure by Safaricom
According to the company, Safaricom has invested over 300 billion Ethiopian Birr (USD 2.27 billion) to build telecommunications and digital financial services infrastructure over the past four years.
This includes the rollout of a fast 4G network, with 3,141 live sites now covering more than half of the population in over 150 towns and cities.
The company reports that it is currently onboarding an average of 31,000 new customers daily.
This high growth rate is being driven by the continued demand for mobile connectivity and digital access in both urban and rural areas.
Job Creation and Local Empowerment
The growth of Safaricom Ethiopia has also contributed significantly to employment. The company directly employs 900 staff members, 97 per cent of whom are Ethiopian.
Additionally, it has created indirect job opportunities for more than 20,000 people through roles such as SIM-selling agents, brand ambassadors, distribution partners, and network support teams.
“This milestone is not just a number. Behind each SIM card, there is an individual, a family, a business, and a future. Reaching 10 million customers brings with it great responsibility and a renewed sense of purpose,” said Wim Vanhelleputte, Chief Executive Officer, Safaricom Ethiopia.
