Elon Musk Announces New Blocking Update; How it Works

This change is just one of many that Musk has made to X since purchasing it.

Elon Musk-owned social media platform – X (Formerly own as Twitter) is set to change the platform’s blocking function.

X on Wednesday, October 16, announced that it will “very soon” be updating the way blocking works, impacting how users interact with blocked accounts.

The update aims to enhance transparency by allowing users to see public posts from accounts that have blocked them.

According to official statements from the X Engineering account, the key change is that blocked users will now see all posts set to public.

“Today, block can be used by users to share and hide harmful or private information about those they’ve blocked. Users will be able to see if such behavior occurs with this update, allowing for greater transparency,” said the company in a post.

X app has confirmed that blocked users will still be unable to like, reply or engage in any other way.

Also, users can report any harassment or offensive content, regardless of whether the account is blocked.

“Soon we’ll be launching a change to how the block function works. If your posts are set to public, accounts you have blocked will be able to view them, but they will not be able to engage (like, reply, repost, etc.),” adds the company.

X Blocking features update

The update to the blocking function on X app is aimed to impact user experience. However, X app hasn’t revealed a specific launch date for the updated blocking functionality but it’s clear the change is imminent.

At present, when a user blocks another on the site, X prevents the blocked users from viewing any activity on the other’s profile or interacting with their posts.

Elon Musk had made the announcement back in September when he stated that it is “High time this happened. “

However, the suggested alteration has sparked concerns about safety and security on the platform, particularly for women.

This upcoming change has been met with varying opinions by X users. Some are against it, stating that this feels like a removal of a very important privacy feature where one could retain control of who could see one’s posts. Additionally, some believe this change could lead to increased harassment.

On the other hand, some believe that for public accounts, if someone that has been blocked wanted to see your posts, they could get around the restriction by creating another account — thus rendering the block feature useless. This change is just one of many that Musk has made to X since his takeover.
