Meta owned social media platforms Facebook and Instagram are currently experiencing a technical breakdown which has led to a global outage.
Many users worldwide reported of being logged out on March 5, 2024, and experiencing difficulties logging back in, with the issue affecting both the app and the website.
At the time of publishing this article, the cause of the outage remained unconfirmed, and the parent company Meta had not yet issued an official statement.
Many users online reported issues with resetting their passwords and using the two-factor security to login with no success.
The outage has caused concern among businesses relying on both Instagram and Facebook for marketing, highlighting the significant role the platforms play in global communication.
Users have migrated to other social networks such as X (formerly Twitter) to voice frustrations and seek updates, with #Facebook and Instagram Down trending on the rival platform.
The trending topic on X was full of complaints from thousands of users with a majority posting their frustrations while others asked what had happened.

Many Facebook users globally experienced the same issue, complaining of first being logged out by the app with an option to log back in.
Facebook and Instagram down
A quick spot check by The Kenya Times confirmed that indeed the platform was down after attempting to log in back into the app.
However, the attempts turned futile as after one entered a correct email address and password, the app responded with a “The password that you’ve entered is incorrect. Forgotten password?” message.
Also, other users have reported that Facebook Messenger which runs as a separate app on most mobile devices is subsequently not working at the moment.

Users have reported to have been met with the same message that they have been logged out with attempts to log back in turning futile.
However, The Kenya Times has established that the messaging service WhatsApp, which is also owned by Meta, is still working normally.
According to statistics by Hoot Suite, Facebook had a total number of 3.05 billion active users as of the second quarter of 2023.
On the other hand, the statistics reveal that the number of daily active users who log into Facebook app or site is estimated 2.09 billion.
