The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) issued a statement on January 25, days after the Cabinet announced its disbandment, along with 12 other institutions.
In the statement, the Board clarified that it is a statutory body established under Section 3(1) of the Engineers Act, 2011.
“Following the Cabinet decision released on Tuesday, 21 January 2025, which outlined a range of measures for various state corporations, including mergers, dissolutions, restructuring, declassification, and defunding, the Board, a regulator of engineering professional services, was included in the list,” read the statement in part.
The board reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling its mandate as per the Engineers’ Act.
EBK also emphasized that all scheduled programs and activities will proceed as planned, including the renewal of this year’s licenses.

Additionally, the Board stated that all other engagements with stakeholders will continue uninterrupted.
“The Board wishes to assure all our stakeholders that it will continue to discharge its mandates and functions as per Engineers Act, 2011, pending implementation framework for the said reforms,” the statement read further.
“All scheduled programs and activities will proceed as planned. Engineers are encouraged to remain compliant and fulfill their obligations under the Act including renewal of 2025 licences.”

It added, “The Board remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the highest standards of engineering practice, fostering excellence and promoting the sustained growth and development of the engineering profession.”
The Engineer’s Board is responsible for the registration of engineers and engineering firms, regulation of engineering professional services, setting standards, development and general practice of engineering.
The government, on Tuesday, January 21, announced the disbandment of the board and 12 other professional bodies.
A dispatch from the cabinet noted that the 13 bodies, which were previously categorized as state corporations, should be declassified.
Other State Corporations Declassified
As a result, these entities, which were traditionally funded through government budgetary allocations, will now operate independently, no longer relying on public finances.
“All professional bodies currently categorised as state corporations should be declassified and should not be financed through budgetary allocations,” the dispatch read in part.

Other institutions disbanded included the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), the Nursing Council of Kenya, and the Public Health Officers and Technicians Council.
Also listed among the declassified entities were the Institute of Human Resource Management, the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board, the Child Welfare Society of Kenya, and the Hydrologists Registration Board.
Additionally, the Cabinet announced the disbandment of the Clinical Officers Authority, the Council of the Institute of Nutritionists and Dieticians, the Kenya Health Professionals Oversight Authority, the Institute of Certified Investment and Financial Analysts, and the Kenya Institute of Supplies Management.
