The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has published the names of petrol stations selling adulterated or export-bound motor fuels in the local market.
In a notice on March 31, EPRA said it is mandated under Section 92 of the Petroleum Act 2019 to monitor petroleum products offered for sale in the local market with the aim of preventing motor fuel adulteration or dumping of export-bound fuels.

The Authority said it undertakes a program of continuous monitoring of the quality of petroleum motor fuels on sale, transport and storage throughout the country.
During the period between January and March 2025, a total of 5,978 tests were conducted at 1,360 petroleum sites.

From the tests, 1347 (99.04%) of the sites were found to be compliant.
However, tests from 13 (0.96%) sites turned out to be non-compliant.

“Pursuant to Regulation 15 of the Energy (Retail Facility Construction and Licensing) Regulations 2013, the non-compliant stations and their particular offences are listed hereunder,” reads part of the notice.
EPRA closed down 12 stations, but three were reopened after complying with the requirements.
Lowisa Oil Filling Station in Kiritiri, Embu County, was closed for offering diesel containing high sulphur.
The Authority labeled the station as a repeat offender but reopened it after upgrading the product and paying taxes and penalties amounting to Ksh306,092.
Kamarusso Filling Station in Nandi County was closed for selling diesel meant for export.
It was reopened after paying taxes and penalties totaling Ksh111,025.

EPRA also closed Hass Petroleum Garissa Junction Service Station for offering sale of domestic Kerosene adulterated with non-marked fuel.
The station was reopened after paying taxes and penalties amounting Ksh148,507.
Wangu Filling Station and Sofla Energy Service Station in Murang’a County have been closed for selling diesel adulterated with domestic kerosene.
Besides, the Miami Energy Filling Station in Rongai, Kajiado County, has been closed for a similar non-compliance.

In Kisumu County, the Authority closed Ahero Stage Filling Station for offering super petrol containing high Sulphur and adulterated with domestic kerosene.
Kobodo Filling Station in Dhiwa, Homabay, has also been shut down for a similar reason.
Further, EPRA closed Mungatsi Filling Station in Busia and Wamuini Filling Station in Endebess, Trans Nzoia, for selling diesel meant for export.
Nairobi Station Closed & Illegal Filling Point
The Authority has closed 61 Bus Filling Station in Kayole, Nairobi, for offering diesel containing high sulphur.
El Bethel Filling Station in Marsabit was closed for selling super petrol containing sulphur.
Additionally, EPRA found an illegal fuel site in Mazeraz in Kilifi County.
The Site was storing diesel in drums and was adulterated with domestic kerosene.
EPRA revealed that the suspects have been arrested, and the matter is under investigation.

EPRA Message to Kenyans
“The Authority maintains a hotline number (0709 366 000), operational during normal working hours to enhance enforcement and compliance activities,” EPRA said.
EPRA has requested the public to report such cases through the hotline number as well as use the Authority’s USSD code (*363#) and SMS service code (40850).
Further, a list of all sites found with adulterated products is also available on the Authority’s www.epra.go.ke.
