Nation Media Group has added new strength to its newsroom with the arrival of veteran former KTN journalist Paul Nabiswa who will work as an editor.

Nabiswa made the announcement on August 23, 2024, through his Facebook page with several Kenyans congratulating him for his new role.

His new role at NTV marks his second stint at the Kimathi Street-based media house, having previously worked as a reporter for QFM and Easy FM radio stations between 2009 and 2012.

Also, Paul Nabiswa has previously worked as a News Editor at Standard Media Group’s KTN and as a Broadcast Journalist at BBC News.

During his working period at KTN, Nabiswa served as the Head of Swahili.

Prior to joining NMG in his first stint in 2009, Nabiswa worked at the Royal Media Services (RMS) as a Citizen TV reporter from 2006.

Paul Nabiswa previously vied for the Likuyani parliamentary seat but failed.

The new NTV editor is among notable journalists who have left Standard Group in recent years following its first wave of mass layoff which happened in 2020, claiming the jobs of tens of journalists.

Several journalists have left SG in recent years for several reasons, compounded by the financial challenges, with the listed company struggling to remain afloat.

In October 2023, veteran journalist the late Rita Tinina left Standard Group and went back to her former employer NMG, which owns NTV, Daily Nation, Business Daily, Taifa Leo, The East African, and Nation FM.

Other journalists who quit Standard Group amid the financial woes are Emmanuel Too, Ted Malanda, Clay Muganda, Ben Kitili, Linda Oriaso, Willy Lusige, Hassan Mwana Ali, Frank Otieno, Brian Obuya, Fridah Mwaka, Lofty Matambo, and Dr Mercy Korir.

KTN News has lost its talent to the competition, which has turned the Moi-owned firm into a hunting ground.

Citizen Poaches KTN Journalists

Former KTN News reporters, Emmanuel Too a promising political reporter, and investigative reporter Francis Odee, were in June poached by the moneyed RMS.

Reporter Willy Lusige who has experience in current affairs’ reporting, on the other hand, also found a new home at Citizen TV after months off air following his exit from the Mombasa-Road based media house.

Additionally, Standard Group’s videographers Hebron Kinyoda and Gabriel Kemei were among recruits poached by Citizen TV in June.

Standard Group which has been struggling financially announced plans to fire more than 300 employees in its latest efforts to remain afloat.

On Tuesday, July 30, the Standard Group Board issued a notice of intention to declare redundancy as stipulated in section 40 (1) of the Employment Act, 2007.

The Board explained that it reached the decision considering the harsh economic environment and the changing trends in the media industry and among the audience due to the advancement in technology.

Following the announcement, the Mombasa Road-based media station shut down several TV stations, taking them off air and abruptly ending multiple popular programs early August.

The media giant shut down KTN News, KTN Farmers TV, among other brands and merged with KTN Home, which aired entertainment and lifestyle content.

According to the media house, the move was part of the measures the embattled media house is taking in an attempt to stay afloat amid financial struggles.
