Nation Media Group (NMG) Journalist Rukia Bulle has been announced as the winner of the prestigious 2024 British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) News Komla Dumor Award.
NMG in an update on Wednesday, August 14, announced Bulle’s win, congratulating her and highlighting her impact with focus on human interest stories.
“Huge congratulations to NMG journalist, Rukia Bulle, for winning the 2024 BBC News Komla Dumor Award! Rukia has made an incredible impact with her compelling storytelling and focus on human interest stories,” announced NMG.
Bulle who specializes in human interest stories is the ninth recipient of the Komla Dumor Award.
The 26-year-old has successfully built a strong following on TikTok through her relatable and informative content on the life of a journalist.

According to BBC, the judges were impressed by her resilience and ability to handle challenging stories, her focus on highlighting under-represented voices and her strong on-air presence.
“Winning this award means a great deal to me. As a journalist, you constantly strive to do your best, regardless of recognition, so to be acknowledged on a global stage through the Komla Dumor Award is incredibly validating,” said Bulle, who appeared last year on a list of 100 Most Influential Kenyan Muslims.
“I hope this award inspires young girls like me, who wear the hijab and come from minority communities, to dream big and achieve their goals.”

The 26-year-old Kenyan journalist will spend three months working with BBC News teams across television, radio and online in London.
She will also receive training and be mentored by leading BBC journalists.
As part of the placement, Bulle will travel to a country in Africa to report on a story that will be broadcast to the BBC’s global audiences.
The Komla Dumor Award was launched by BBC in 2015 in honor of the legacy of Ghanaian journalist Komla Dumor who worked for BBC World News as the main presenter of its program Focus on Africa but died suddenly aged 41 in 2014.

It involves a program which aims to uncover and promote fresh talent from the African continent, with winners spending three months at the BBC headquarters.
Past Winners
Besides Bulle, other Kenyans who have won the Kumlor Dumor Award include former Citizen TV anchor and BBC journalist Waihiga Mwaura who won the 2018 edition, and CNN journalist Victoria Rubadiri who is the recipient of the 2020 edition.
Previous award recipients are Paa Kwesi Asare, Dingindaba Jonah Buyoya, Solomon Serwanjja, Amina Yuguda, Didi Akinyelure and Nancy Kacungira, the inaugural winner.
Past recipient Waihiga Mwaura, who was among notable journalists who congratulated Bulle for her win, wished her the best as she embarks on her three months stay at BBC headquarters.
