Former principal of Alliance High School and founding Dean of the African Leadership Academy in South Africa, Christopher Khaemba has been selected as a finalist for a prestigious African award.
Christopher Khaemba in a social media update on Wednesday August 7, 2024, announced that he had been selected as a finalist for the Africa Education Medal.
Khaemba expressed gratitude for being among the finalists of the medal while attaching a letter by Senior Education Business Leader of global tech company HP Mayank Thingra.
In the letter sent to the ex-Principal, Thingra highlighted that Khaemba’s work in transforming education stands as an example to others.
“It is with great pleasure that I extend my most sincere congratulations on being selected as a Finalist for the Africa Education Medal. Your work in transforming education stands as an example to others.
As part of this esteemed community of leaders we are building, your passion and dedication to education will undoubtedly inspire countless others to follow in your footsteps,” read part of the letter.
“Together, we are creating a global network of educational innovators who share the common goal of seeing a world in which quality education is enjoyed by all. Once again, congratulations on this well-deserved recognition. I wish you the best of luck for all your future endeavors.”
Khaemba is among the ten finalists for the Africa Education Medal which was established by T4 Education and HP in 2022.
Africa Education Medal
It was the first of the three World Education Medals to be founded and has grown to become Africa’s most prestigious education accolade.
It celebrates leaders with proven records and who have sparked change across the continent, bringing together all those striving for an Africa in which every child has access to quality education.
The ex-Alliance High School principal and the Co-Founder of the Kenya Drylands Education Fund (KDEF) Ahmed Kura are the only Kenyans who have featured in this year’s final list of 10.

Ahmed Kura is the Country Director of KDEF which he co-founded in 2013 with longtime Manchester resident Sarah Hadden.
Christopher Situma Khaemba, the former principal of Alliance High School and founding Dean of the African Leadership Academy (ALA), is widely regarded as one of Africa’s leading educators.
Khaemba has also served the Government as the executive for education, youth affairs, children, culture and social services.

The Kenyan educator moved into teaching at Alliance High School as a mathematics and physics teacher, where in a 14-year stint, he rose up through the ranks to become principal.

In 1995, Khaemba was assigned as the principal of Friends School Kamusinga to address the declining standards in the school before he was recalled becoming the principal of Alliance again in 1998 after three years.
During Khaemba’s term as principal, he propelled Alliance High School to great heights and the school was consistently ranked within the top ten best performing schools in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Christopher Khaemba was head-hunted to be the inaugural dean of the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2008.
He became the first dean of the ALA in September that year, moving from his role as principal of Alliance High School to take up the position.
The founders of the school, who include Fred Swaniker, Acha Leke and Peter Mobaur, had chosen Khaemba through a seven-month process, and stated that the ex-Alliance principal stood out due to his record at Alliance High School and Kamusinga.
Khaemba sits on the Global Advisory Board of the ALA, and still supports the school with fundraising and alumni support as of 2016 since leaving his role as dean.
Nova Pioneer Academies
Following his exit as a dean at ALA, the former Alliance High School Principal was appointed director and co-founder of Nova Pioneer Academies, a chain of schools in Kenya and South Africa in 2015.
He teamed up with other like-minded educationists to establish Nova Pioneer Academies that incorporate current curricula with innovation and leadership to produce students who are more prepared for the challenges of the 21st century.
Kenya is home to Nova Pioneer Boys, Nova Pioneer Girls and Nova Pioneer Primary Schools while South Africa has Nova Pioneer Ormonde near FNB Stadium (formerly Soccer City Stadium), Nova Pioneer Midrand and Nova Pioneer North Riding.
Khaemba has also served in the Urban Planning and Lands department and under former Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero’s administration as Nairobi County’s Education Executive, a role he assumed in 2013.
