The family of the late Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Were, has spoken out regarding the disappearance of Dorothy Apondi, who was last seen living with the legislator.
In a media interview with NTV on Sunday, June 1, Charles’s brother, Paul Were, confirmed that Dorothy had been living in Charles’s house when the MP was residing in Meru.
“It is true that the lady was living in my brother’s house. She is a relative of ours,” Paul Were said.
Paul also dismissed claims that his late brother was involved in Dorothy’s disappearance. He insisted that Dorothy left the MP’s house in Meru of her own free will and that the family has not heard from her since. He added that she left while Charles was at his rural home in Kasipul.
“She was around 40 years old — not a young lady. Even in your own home, if someone of that age comes to live with you and then decides to leave, would you take them back to where they came from? You just let them go. Even on the day she left my brother’s house, he was here at home,” Paul explained.
Family of Charles Were Denies Link to Apondi’s Disappearance
He further defended his brother, saying that before Charles’s death, he genuinely wanted to know Dorothy’s whereabouts.
“Even when he died, he was still searching for the truth, because this was something that was politicised,” Paul said.

Paul also claimed that the narrative about his brother’s involvement in Apondi’s disappearance was created by political opponents to tarnish his brother’s reputation.
“During election time, politicians create stories. It was politics aimed at tarnishing my brother’s name. She is a relative by blood. As a family, we’re appealing for this girl to be found,” he stated.
Dorothy’s Sister Narrates Encounter with Late MP
On the other hand, Dorothy Apondi’s sister, Nancy Adhiambo, said that after learning of her sister’s disappearance from their mother, she went to record a statement at Meru Police Station.

She recounted that the late MP tore up her statement and accused her of being used by his political rivals.
“When I went there, he almost grabbed me by the neck. He was sitting across from me, holding my statement in his hands,” she said.
“I told him, ‘This is what you are — the propaganda you’re saying about me. Tell those who sent you that I’m still running.’ I said, ‘Which people? I’m just looking for my sister.’
“Then he tore up my statement right in front of me, put it back in the file, and closed it. That’s politics. That’s politics,” Adhiambo narrated.
Dorothy Apondi has been missing for 14 years, since she disappeared in 2010.
