Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has announced the death of former Bumula Member of Parliament (MP) Lawrence Sifuna.
In a statement on Sunday, December 3, the Senator, who is also the kin of the former MP revealed that he passed away at night while receiving treatment at Eldoret Hospital.
Further, he detailed that Lawrence Sifuna was receiving treatment after suffering a stroke a few days earlier.
Notably, the late Sifuna served as a Member of Parliament for Kanduyi, Bumula Constituency and later Bungoma South Constituency.
“Hon. Lawrence Sifuna, former MP Kanduyi and Bumula Constituencies left us last night whilst receiving treatment at an Eldoret Hospital following a stroke he suffered a few days ago.
“As a Family we are grateful for all the messages of love that we continue to receive. May God Bless you all,” Sifuna stated.

ODM Mourns the Former MP
At the same time, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) extended their condolences to the family of the former MP including Senator Sifuna.
The Raila Odinga-led political party praised Lawrence Sifuna for his commitment to the party and for his work while in power.
“We commiserate with the family of our Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, friends and relatives following the loss of the Hon. Lawrence Sifuna.
“Hon. Sifuna was a Life Member of the ODM party. He is a former MP for Bungoma South Constituency (presently Kanduyi) & also Bumula. May his soul Rest in Peace,” the statement read in part.
On the other hand, Azimio Leader Raila Odinga eulogized Sifuna as an outstanding figure in the second liberation and a defender of the people.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of Hon. Lawrence Simiyu Sifuna, a former MP, key figure in the second liberation, defender of the people, and a life member of ODM.
“My condolences to the Sifuna family, Party SG Edwin Sifuna, the people of Kanduyi, and the entire nation,” Raila’s statement read in part.

The Life of Lawrence Sifuna
Born in 1946, Lawrence Sifuna was first elected to parliament in 1979 to represent Bungoma South Constituency.
During his time as a legislator, he stood out as a revolutionist and was a member of the Left-Wing Members of Parliament during the regime of the late former President Daniel Moi in the 1980s.
Additionally, Sifuna and other six liberal parliamentarians were referred to as the Seven Bearded Sisters by colleagues in the August House.
Other members of the bearded sisters included Koigi wa Wamwere, James Orengo, Abuya Abuya, Chibule wa Tsuma, Onyango Midika, Mwashengu wa Mwachofi and Philomena Chelang’at Mutai.
Notably, Siaya Governor James Orengo is the only remaining member of the bearded sisters who is in active politics.
