In Kenya’s music industry, few names attract the kind of admiration that Major Nameye Khadija, popularly known by his stage name Mejja, pulls today.
Known for his storytelling and authentic lyrics, Mejja has risen from a humble beginning in Majengo, Nyeri County, to being one of the most influential artists in Urban music and Genge from Kenya, a style that blends hip hop, dancehall, and Kenyan vernacular.
Mejja was born on May 23, 1986, in Majengo, Nyeri County. He was raised by his single mother, Khadija, whom he describes as his greatest inspiration. In his past interviews, Mejja often credits his mother’s sacrifices as the driving force behind his determination.
He attended Naromoru High School in Nanyuki for his secondary education before focusing on music to support his family.

He discovered his passion for music while in primary school, when he and his older brother Wambugu formed a small group called Ghetto Clan. Together, they started performing in local competitions, and he eventually carved his path out of hardship.
After taking part in the Celtel Talent Search, he emerged as the winner and was awarded KSh 20,000. Then he relocated to Nairobi, where he met Clemo of Calif Records, who helped nurture his talent.
Mejja’s breakthrough in music was in 2008 when he released “Jana Kuliendaje” a song that earned him a loyal fan base.
The track earned him recognition at the Chaguo la Teeniez Awards, launching him into the limelight as one of Kenya’s freshest voices.
Over the years he has continued to release songs and music videos, which have led to powerful and countless collaborations with well-known artists, such as “Utawezana” with Femi One, “Cheza Kama Wewe” with Trio Mio, “Nairobi” with Bensoul and Sauti Sol.

Family
This well-known artist is a devoted father of two children from two different mothers. He often shares moments of fatherhood with his fans.
He has expressed a desire for his children to be raised in a stable family environment while acknowledging the challenges of raising them in a single-parent setup.
From being raised by a single mother, Mejja has turned his early life struggles into fuel for his craft, using humor and real-life experiences to connect with fans across generations.
As a former member of The Kansoul, he continues to thrive as a solo artist and recently revealed that Spotify has finally verified him, and his long-anticipated album is ready.
Mejja experienced a temporary throat illness in late 2022 and early 2023, which led to a short break from his music career for treatment.
