Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has explained why he refrained from naming the building where he claimed abduction operations are being coordinated allegedly by an individual who is a cousin of a senior government official.

In a media interview with representatives from various media outlets in Western Kenya, Gachagua expressed his hesitation to disclose the building’s name was due to concerns for the safety and well-being of its occupants.

“I mentioned that they need to dismantle that unit. I did not want to name the building because there are people there conducting business and naming it could put those individuals’ lives and the building in danger,” he said.

“I am giving the government time to dismantle that particular unit on the 21st floor of that particular building.”

Gachagua condemns Nyandarua chaos

At the same time, the former Deputy President addressed the fracas witnessed during a homecoming ceremony in Shamata, Nyandarua County, for a Member of County Assembly (MCA) on Saturday, December 28.

During the event, a teargas canister was lobbed towards the dais while Nyandarua Senator John Methu was speaking, causing commotion among the gathered crowd.

Some attendees confronted and roughed up the individual accused of being responsible for the canister before police intervened to save him.

Gachagua alleged that the government was behind the incident, claiming the person who threw the teargas canister was arrested but later released on orders from Inspector General (IG) of Police Douglas Kanja.

“Everything is on video. People can see what happened. A person was arrested, but last night, the Inspector General of Police ordered his unconditional release because they were behind it—he is a police officer. But those are desperate acts; they change nothing. They only embolden the people,” Gachagua alleged.

The former Deputy President’s remarks come days after he revealed the existence of a building within the Nairobi City Centre, in the Central Business District (CBD), where he alleged that a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer who is a cousin to a senior government official in President William Ruto‘s administration has been planning and commanding the recent wave of abductions.

He identified the officer as Mr. Abel and claimed the abductions are coordinated from the 21st floor of that building.

Gachagua further alleged that those behind the abductions do not operate under the instructions of the IG.

He asked President Ruto to order the release of all those who have been abducted or else he will name those people behind the abductions.

His call to end abductions has also been echoed by various leaders, including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
