Kisumu County Governor Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o has challenged traffic police to answers four questions after a string of road accidents in the county.
In a statement on January 29, Nyong’o highlighted some areas he noted police should come out to clear the air about.
Referring to the Monday dawn accident between a Super Metro bus and a lorry, Nyong’o questioned the roadworthiness of the two vehicles and asked whether the bus was carrying passengers beyond its capacity.
Additionally, the Kisumu Governor asked police to clarify whether the bus company had been licensed to operate on the Kisumu route where the accident took place.
“The Othoo accident, for example, has raised many questions which the traffic police must help us answer. Were the vehicles involved in the crash road worthy?” Governor Nyong’o posed.
“Was the bus carrying passengers beyond its capacity? What became of the rule barring lorries and trailers from using the highways at night? Was the bus licensed to operate on the route?”
Nyong’o also mentioned that the Super Metro crash was the second one in Kisumu County in a span of three days, referring to an accident which claimed the life of a journalist three days earlier.
“On Friday Morning, we lost Star Newspaper Journalist Dickens Wasonga in another road crash in Mamboleo along the Kisumu-Kakamega Road,” he said.

Amidst the tragedies, Nyong’o urged relevant authorities to open investigations into the rising number of accidents on the roads in Nyanza region.
He further issued a warning stating that the police must actively intensify traffic laws and impose severe penalties on those who break them in order to reduce the number of traffic accidents.
“On behalf of the people of Kisumu and the County Government, I wish to send my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who perished in the Othoo accident and wish quick recovery to the injured,” he expressed.
