The National Heroes Council has opened the process of picking heroes for the 2025 Mashujaa Day Awards, inviting members of the public to submit nominations of individuals to be considered for recognition as national heroes.
In a notice issued on July 1, 2025, the National Heroes Council seeks to identify, select, and recognize individuals who qualify for designation as national heroes.
“Pursuant to provisions of Section 22 of the Act, the public is hereby notified that the Council is calling for submission of proposals for nomination of suitable persons to be recommended for declaration as national heroes. Nominations may be made by a member of the public, an organization, a group of persons or an institution,” read the statement.
Nominations should be submitted within 21 days of the notice, that is, on or before 21st July 2025, for consideration for recognition on Mashujaa Day, October 20, 2025.
National Heroes Nomination Guidelines
According to the Kenya Heroes Act, for a person to be considered a national hero, they must have positively contributed selflessly and sacrificed for the country in any of the 14 functional areas stipulated in its First Schedule.
Consequently, nominations may be made in any one of the following functional areas: liberation struggle, spiritual leadership, indigenous knowledge, cultural values and practices, arts, sports, scholarship, professionalism and research, peace-making, statesmanship, entrepreneurship and industry, philanthropy, human rights, national cohesion and integration, and environmental conservation.
Additionally, nominees should demonstrate values mentioned in Article 10 of the Constitution of Kenya, as well as the following qualities listed in the First Schedule of the Act that include selflessness, courage, perseverance, commitment, expertise, talent, innovativeness, discipline, optimism, and creativity, among others.

My name is Mourice Omondi Aoo born 28th February in Ambira sub location Ngunya location Ugunja sub County Siaya. Iam the 6th Born child of Protatius Aloo Magero and Eunice Nungo .In family of 13 Children. My father worked as a Prison officer at The Nairobi West Kenya Prisons Services training college. I started training karate at age 7years old while learning at Langat Road Primary school. My karate teacher was Yoshio Tamora Sensei who came from Japan to teach self defence techniques to Prison recruit and staff .He teaching us Gojuryu style of karate. After completing certificates of Primary Education went Darajani secondary school in Kibwezi Machakos County. I did continue with my karate whenever I was on at the coast where my sister was also Prison officer at Shimo la tewa women Prison..After my Kenya Certificate of secondary education. I Joined Kenya Prisons Services training college in Ruiru .Where I joined Karate training under the later Wallace Gachanja Sensei,Paul Amol Sensei and the Stephen Githuthwa Sensei. I was graded to 8th kyu Yellow Belt and after I completed College was transferred to Nairobi Detention Camp in Industrial Area Prison. Here is where my journey of training karate fully started. I met Martin Onyango Sensei and the late George Otieno .Who training Karate at the Nairobi West Prisons training college Hall.Our Nairobi Regional Prison Gojuryu karatedo Club .Was very strong especially in competition. Later we moved our club at Nyayo National stadium Swimming pool. I was graded to 6th Green belt. Later I started my own evening karate classes among my students was James Akama who is now of the representative of Kenya National sports Council..I become the first Kenyan to be graded 3rd kyu Brown Belt (kohai Sempai)senior student by Japanese of Experts from Japan. At Present iam the first Kenyan in Gojuryu karatedo who has the highest Rank of 5th Dan Black Belt.
I become the first Kenyan karate to instructor to Establish the Kenya Karate do Gojukai Association KKGA with Gerson Misumi Sensei became our Chairman,who is also the managing director of Carnivore Restaurants in Nairobi. Our Association became got affiliated International Karate-do Gojukai Association I.K.G.A in Tokyo Japan through All Africa Karatedo Gojukai Association A.A.K G.A in Capetown South Africa. Peter Brandon Hanshi 8th Dan Black Belt who is the President came to Kenya in several occasions to conduct Gojuryu karatedo Seminar to Kenyan karateka.We got opportunity to host the Grandmaster Goshi Yamaguchii who is President of International Karate-do Gojukai Association I.K.G.A in Tokyo Japan. He came for two day Seminar in Kenya at Nyayo National stadium Basketball Court 2004.I became the first karate instructor to organise several seminars in the whole Kenya having taught several schools institutions and colleges. I also became first Kenyan to teach karate across the borders. Uganda,Tanzania Rwanda,Burundi and Congo. I was also the first Kenyan to conduct Referees and Judges course in Eastern Africa. Through the Eastern Africa Gojukai karatedo Association we managed with other styles to form Union of Africa karate federation UFAK Zone five. I have became the first Karate instructor to teach Makuru children home St Bhakita and Kwetu children homes in Madaraka and Kamulu.
I have changed the life of many through karate teaching like one of students Stella Ngina kasimili Sensei who was nominated as a hero .with this I also deserve to be Hero.Also my 6children are all karateka and my Late wife.
