Govt Reveals Dr Mbae Resigned from Non-existent Job

The Government Delivery Unit (GDU) has clarified reports surrounding the resignation of Peter Mbae as Head of Government Delivery Services.

In a statement on Monday, January 13, the unit indicated that Mbae did not hold the position he was resigning from.

According to the statement, Dr Peter Mbae ceased being an employee of the Government Delivery Services (GDS) on July 11, 2024, after President William Ruto resolved Cabinet.

Mbae’s job was tied to the portfolio of the then Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Performance and Delivery Management Moses Kuria.

Therefore, when Kuria left the office, he lost his job.

“It is therefore misleading and inaccurate to portray his departure as a resignation occurring in January 2025.

“A formal communication with regards to the end of his contract was made to him on July 24, 2024, by the then Principal Secretary in charge of the State Department for Performance and Delivery Management,” the statement read in part.

Payment of Dues and Working Environment

Consequently, all dues owed Mbae were paid upon the conclusion of his service up to and including July 11, 2024.

Therefore, the GDU has clarified that there are no pending financial obligations or unresolved issues regarding Mbae’s service in government.

Also, the unit has refuted reports from the former employee that he quit the job because of unfavourable working conditions.

“There are no pending financial obligations or unresolved issues pertaining to his former role within the GDS. The assertions made by Dr Mbae regarding unfavourable working conditions are without basis,” added the statement.

In Mbae’s place, Lee Kyonze was appointed in an acting capacity as Head of the Government Delivery Unit on July 12, 2024.

The Resignation of Dr Mbae

In a letter dated January 9, 2025, Mbae sent his resignation to the Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service Executive Office Felix Koskei saying that he made the decision to quit because his concerns were not being addressed.

He explained that he can no longer continue to serve in his position and will take the opportunity to pursue other things.

“Despite my passion, focus and consistency, for reasons and issues that I have consistently brought to your attention and have not been resolved to date, it has not been possible to carry out my duties as intended and my position as Head of Government Delivery Services is no longer tenable,” he said.

“In order to be accountable to the people of Kenya, owing to the fact that the appointment was widely circulated, I therefore request to formally disengage from this appointment so as to pursue other interests.”

He thanked Koskei for the opportunity and trust he placed in him to serve in public service.
