As 2024 began, several high-profile Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) in Kenya stepped down from their positions.
The Kenya Times explores the notable CEOs who left their roles in different organizations.
Patrick Quarcoo
Patrick Quarcoo is a prominent executive whose name is known within the media industry. He is the founder and chief executive officer of Radio Africa Group, which oversees some of Kenya’s leading media brands, including, Classic 105, KISS 100, Smooth FM, Radio Jambo, East FM, Gukena FM, and The Star newspaper.
Quarcoo is credited with developing the brands of KISS 100 and Classic 105 by attracting top talent, which has allowed both stations to dominate the radio airwaves for over a decade.
The Ghanaian entrepreneur retired as CEO of Radio Africa Group on July 24, 2024. His departure marked the end of a 24-year tenure during which he made a significant impact on the media landscape in Kenya and beyond.
Stephen Gitagama
Stephen Gitagama is also among the prominent CEOs who stepped down from their positions in 2024.
He left his role as CEO of Nation Media Group (NMG) at the end of July 2024, after serving in this capacity from June 7, 2018, until his departure.

Over a span of 17 years, Gitagama held various roles within the company, including Finance Director and an executive member of the board.
Among his notable achievements in the company include broadening the company’s digital footprint, diversifying its range of content and strengthening its role in influencing public conversations.
Barry Otieno
Barry Otieno resigned as the CEO of the Football Federation of Kenya (FKF) on October 8, 2024, citing the pressures of the demanding role as his main reason for stepping down.

His resignation came ahead of the national elections that took place on December 7, 2024. Otieno had been serving as FKF CEO since July 22, 2019, and is now vying for the presidency of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) in the upcoming elections.

During his time in office, Otieno played a vital role in managing the federation through difficult periods, including the FIFA suspension of Kenya in 2022. He worked diligently to restore Kenya’s place in international football.
Anthony Mwangi
Anthony Mwangi resigned as the CEO of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) on August 14, 2024.
He served in this role from September 15, 2022, making it nearly two years at the helm of KAM.
His departure was announced by KAM’s Board Chairperson, Jane Karuku, who expressed gratitude for his dedicated service and significant contributions to the association and the manufacturing sector.
Stephen Omollo
Plan International on April 2024 announced the resignation of Stephen Omolo who had held the position since February 2022.
The company announced that Omollo stepped down due to financial reasons. Gunvor Kronman, Board Chair of Plan International, praised Stephen Omollo for his authentic leadership and service in furthering the mission of the organization.
