The County Government of Nyeri announced the intention to exhume bodies from Karatina Cemetery, to pave way for the construction of a road.
In a notice, the devolved unit stated that it intended to exhume and move the bodies with effect from the expiry of six (6) months from the date of the notice to allow the Kenol–Sagana–Marua Highway and dualling of the Sagana–Marua (A2) Road Section.
Notably, since the county published the notice on October 26, the bodies at Karatina Cemetery should be exhumed and moved on or after April 25, 2024.
“The County Executive Committee Member for the Department of Medical Services and Public Health gives notice that County Government of Nyeri intends to exhume and move the bodies buried at Karatina Cemetery, with effect from the expiry of six (6) months from the date of this notice to allow for construction of the Kenol–Sagana–Marua Highway and dualing of the Sagana–Marua (A2) Road Section,” read part of the notice.
Further, the county government stated that the order was being made in exercise of the powers conferred by section 147 (1) of the Public Health Act.

This section of the Act gives the County Executive Committee Member for the Department of Medical Services and Public Health the power to order the exhumation and removal of bodies if he or she is satisfied that it is necessary in the interest of public health.
The notice also states that the exhumation and removal of the bodies will be carried out in a dignified and respectful manner. The County Government of Nyeri apologized for any inconvenience or distress that this may cause to the families of the deceased.

Kenol-Sagana-Marua dual carriageway
The construction of the Kenol-Sagana-Marua dual carriageway was financed by the African Development Bank – AfDB and is expected to have a major impact on the regional economy by connecting major agricultural and tourism destinations and creating employment opportunities for thousands of residents.

Upon completion of the dual carriage, the travel time between Nyeri and Nairobi will reduce by at least one hour.
Also, there will be improved regional integration by connecting the Isiolo-Moyale corridor to Ethiopia and the Isiolo-Mandera corridor to Somalia.
