At least five people have been confirmed dead in a grisly accident between a bus and a trailer along the Mombasa- Nairobi highway early Wednesday, October 18, morning.
Kibwezi Sub-County Police Commander Peter Maina has stated that the bus, belonging to Chania Executive Bus company, collided with the trailer and a tractor.
According to Maina, the bus hit the tractor at the back before swaving to the opposite side of the road and colliding head on with a trailer.
The five confirmed dead include the bus driver, the tractor driver, the trailer driver and two others who were travelling inside the trailer.
Images seen of the scene by The Kenya Times, showed the passenger bus completely damaged at the front with shattered glasses everywhere.
Additionally, the bus was torn on its side and passenger’s goods were left lying on the road.

Witnesses Recount Accident
Witnesses stated that the bus driver was overtaking on the wrong side of the road leading to the fatal accident.
Further, the witnesses of the ordeal detailed that the road, where the bus was overtaking had a continuous yellow line.
Other casualties were rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment as first respondents rushed to the scene.

Latest NTSA Statistics
According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) at least 21,760 people were involved in road accidents in 2022.
The data indicates an increase of 1,135 compared to 2021, where 20,625 people were involved in road crashes.
Latest NTSA records show that in 2023, 2,124 people have lost their lives in road accidents between January and June this year.
Moreover, the authority blames incompetent and unfit drivers for the increase in fatalities indicating that many of them were pedestrians at 571 followed by motorcycle operators with 449 casualties.
