Govt to Use 920 Parcels of Landowners for 2 Major Projects

The National Land Commission (NLC) has identified 920 parcels of land for the construction of two major projects.

NLC in a Gazette notice dated 21st June 2024 announced that 858 land parcels across Kilifi County will be utilized for the construction of an 82.5-kilometre power transmission line.

“In pursuance of sections 143, 144 and 146 of the Land Act, 2012, the National Land Commission on behalf of Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO), gives notice that the National Government intends to acquire a wayleave corridor on parcels of land listed for the construction of 82.5 KM Malindi Weru-Kilifi 220kV Transmission line in Kilifi County,” read the notice in part.

“This notice serves to inform the listed landowners of the plan to construct an electricity transmission line, a public project. consisting of construction of towers and conductors overlying their land.”

NLC indicated that details of compensation for affected individual landowners will be communicated accordingly.

Additionally, the commission said any representations/objections regarding the wayleave should be made to the National Land Commission via the address PO. Вох 44417- 00100, Nairobi.

Plans for the affected land may be inspected during office hours at the National Land Commission, Ardhi House 3rd floor Room 305, 1st Ngong Avenue, Nairobi or KETRACO at Kawi House, South C. Nairobi, and Kilifi County Lands Offices.

Besides, NLC Chairperson Gerishom Otachi, vide Gazette Notice No 7788 stated that another 62 parcels of land would be used for the Construction of the Mombasa Gate Bridge (MGB)in Mombasa County.

Otachi noted that the request was on behalf of the Kenya National Highway Commission (KeNHA) and that the 62 affected landowners would be compensated.

“In pursuance of sections 112 and 162 (2) of the Land Act, 2012, Part VIII and further to Gazette Notice Nos. 12299 of 2021 and15192 of 2022, the National Land Commission on behalf of Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) gives notice that the Inquiry to hear claims to compensation for interested parties in the land required for the construction of the Mombasa Gate Bridge Project in Mombasa County shall be held on the dates and venues shown below,” Otach said in a notice.

NLC adjusted an initial list of parcels of land selected for the project and also published those which had been deleted from the list.

Meanwhile, the MGB Construction Project aims to provide a functional road connection between Mombasa Island and Mombasa Mainland South both separated by the Likoni Channel which is currently crossed through ferries operated by the Kenya Ports Authority.

Furthermore, the 1.4 km link bridge (with a 660m span) will carry four traffic lanes and will be 69-Metre high at mid-point, leaving sufficient space for ships to cross underneath it and the largest stayed cable bridge in sub-Saharan Africa. 

Any person in the affected parcels is required to deliver to the National Land Commission on or before the day of the inquiry a written claim for compensation, a copy of identify card (ID), Personal Identification No. (PIN), land ownership documents and bank account details.

The Commission offices are in Ardhi House 3rd Floor, Room 305, 1st Ngong Avenue Nairobi, and at the National Land Commission’s County Co-ordinator’s Office in Mombasa County.

Also to note, among the land parcels listed belongs to Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Ports Authority, Mombasa Trust Club Trustees, The Municipal Council of Mombasa and the Kilifi County Council.
