The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has opened applications to nurses and midwives pursuing advanced and specialized nursing courses in approved training institutions in Kenya.
According to HELB, the eligible applicants can get up to KShs. 500,000 study loans at only 4% per year.
The loan is available for both unemployed or preservice students and salaried students.
“Available to both unemployed/pre-service and Salaried students,” part of the statement read.

Requirements for the HELB Loan for Preservice students
Preservice students enrolled in training before becoming registered nurses will be required to provide an admission letter from a recognized university or training institution in Kenya (certified by The Nursing Council of Kenya).
Additionally, they will be required to provide a copy of the National Identification Card (ID) and a copy of their KRA PIN.
Copies of the applicants’ National IDs from two guarantors and a recent color passport-size photograph of the applicant will be presented during the application process.
Requirements for Salaried students
- An admission letter from a recognized university or training institution in Kenya. (certified by The Nursing Council of Kenya).
- Copy of National ID (certified by a Commissioner of Oaths).
- Copy of KRA PIN (certified by a Commissioner of Oaths).
- Copies of National IDs from two guarantors-Guarantors must be employed (certified by a Commissioner of Oaths).
- Recent colored passport-size photograph of the applicant.
- Copies of the recent 3 months’ pay slips for salaried students (certified by your employer).
Features of the HELB Loan
According to HELB, the loan offers quick processing and a competitive interest rate of 4% per year.
Flexible repayment periods of up to 60 months (5 years) are issued to the applicants to fully repay their loans.
A maximum of 500,000 Kenya shillings fund will be given to the applicants, with allowed monthly employer check-off repayments.
The HELB loan is available to both unemployed/pre-service and Salaried students, covering tuition fees for Higher Diploma studies for the unemployed students and tuition fees for Higher Diploma, Undergraduate, master’s & PhD studies for the salaried students.

How to apply
All applicants are required to visit the website www. hef.co.ke to access the application portal.
Using the applicant’s personal mobile number registered under their name and ID number, register and activate an account.
the creating a profile, applicants should ensure they select their level of study as “Higher National Diploma, Degree, or Master’s”.
When filling in the education background, applicants will be required to indicate that they were not admitted by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
After completion, the applicant will be required to select the Advanced Nursing Education Fund on the loan application and complete an application form.
Upon successful application and submission of the application online, the applicant will not be required to submit any physical application to HELB.
