As Homa Bay County prepares to host Madaraka Day on June 1, 2025, President William Ruto, who will oversee the national celebration, is expected to launch several development projects in the county.
The Head of State is expected to officially open various national and county government projects currently underway, including affordable housing units, Homa Bay pier, improved fish landing sites, and markets, among others.
According to Governor Gladys Wanga, hosting Madaraka Day presents a historic opportunity not only for the county but also for other regions that have not previously had the chance to hold such national events.
“The decision to host the 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations goes beyond ceremony; it serves as a catalyst for long-term growth and development. This is not just a moment in time—it’s a step towards a brighter future for Homa Bay,” Governor Wanga stated.
Madaraka Day Celebrations to Create Temporary Jobs for Residents
With a population of over 1.1 million, Homa Bay’s economy, which primarily relies on small-scale farming and fishing that support thousands of livelihoods, is expected to see a significant economic boost driven by the influx of government officials, security personnel, media, and tourists.
According to the County Boss, this influx is expected to trigger a surge in demand for accommodation, food, transport, and other essential services.

Governor Wanga noted that local businesses, especially in hospitality and retail, stand to benefit, and many temporary jobs will be created for youth and women.
Preparations are already underway for the lakeside county as it gets ready to host the Madaraka Day Celebrations.
Projects Being Upgraded as County Prepares to Host Madaraka Celebrations
At the heart of these preparations is the Raila Odinga Stadium, currently undergoing a remarkable Ksh500 million upgrade. This renovation will increase the stadium’s capacity from 2,000 to an impressive 20,000, allowing it to accommodate the thousands of visitors expected for the national event.
New terraces and modern amenities are also being installed to ensure that the facility meets national standards.
In addition, the Kabunde Airstrip is being rehabilitated and expanded to accommodate larger aircraft, including Embraer jets, to facilitate smooth travel for dignitaries and guests. Key roads, such as the Homa Bay highway, are also being upgraded to improve connectivity and future event capacity.

Beyond infrastructure and economic gains, the celebration offers a platform to showcase Homa Bay’s cultural richness. Known for vibrant music, traditional crafts, and delicious cuisine, the county plans to highlight its heritage to the rest of the country.
“Hosting national celebrations is a powerful way to unite our country while showcasing our unique cultures,” said Governor Wanga.
Homa Bay now stands to join the list of Masinde Muliro Stadium (Bungoma), Kericho Green Stadium (Kericho), Embu Stadium (Embu County), and Kwale Stadium (Kwale County) among others that have hosted national celebrations in past years.
