Albert Ojwang, the late X influencer linked to a social media campaign accusing Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat of corruption, died in police custody less than 12 hours after arriving in Nairobi following his arrest.
According to a submission from Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja on Wednesday, June 11, Ojwang was arrested on June 7 in Homa Bay County after being mentioned by another suspect, Kevin Moinde.
Kanja, who was appearing before the Senate, explained that Moinde had earlier been arrested in Kisii County for publishing defamatory content about DIG Eliud Lagat on his X account.
He was later transferred to DCI headquarters, where he disclosed the involvement of 4 other individuals, one being the late Albert Ojwang, Dorcas Mawia, Peter Mbugua, and Douglas Marigiri. He also shared their respective X accounts.

The Last Meal Albert Ojwang Had
On June 7, officers went to Mawego Police Station in Homa Bay, where the commanding officer assigned them three other officers to escort them to the home of Albert Ojwang, where they arrested him.
“Because Albert had posted similar defamatory content, On June 7, 2025, the officers went to Homa Bay at Mawego Police Station and provided with 3 officers to accompany them to arrest Albert Ojwang,” said Kanja.
According to Kanja, Ojwang was transferred to Nairobi by a team from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The team made a stop at Narok on their way to Nairobi for refreshments and provided Ojwang with what would become his last meal before his tragic death.
Ojwang, Kanja narrated, asked for water, a bottle of soda, and a biscuit.
The team arrived at Central Police Station at 9:17 PM. Seven minutes later, Ojwang reportedly called his wife to confirm his safe arrival.
“The team made a stop at Narok for refreshments during which Albert requested for water, a bottle of soda and biscuit.
“They arrived in Central police Station, Nairobi at 2117hrs. At 2124hrs Albert ojwang contacted his wife on phone to inform her of his safe arrival,” added Kanja.

His Death in Police Cell
On the morning of June 8, officers reported that they found Ojwang unconscious in the police cells. He was rushed to Mbagathi Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been notified and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
Ojwang was among five individuals allegedly behind posts claiming that DIG Lagat had strategically placed trusted officers in key positions to control revenue and intelligence flows within the National Police Service.
The posts also alleged that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) was investigating the DIG over a $2.6 million home purchase, claims the EACC denied.
The case was assigned to special officers within the DCI, who traced the X account linked to the posts.
Following Moinde’s arrest, police said he named Ojwang and three others: Dorcas Mawia, Peter Mbugua, and Douglas Marigiri.
